Examples of Duties



Job Purpose
Under general supervision, provides specialized park safety and security work that involves routine patrol of county parklands and facilities ensuring compliance with park rules and ordinances. May also provide environmental and nature programs, and the operation and maintenance of the nature center facility.

Essential Job Duties


  • Manages the daily operations of a park or Nature Center.
  • Supervise, train, and lead other recreation and park employees.
  • Develops work schedules.
  • Recruits, trains, and guides volunteers.
  • Develops and oversees the completion of work projects.
  • Participates in the development of programming and event activity schedule.
  • Publicizes programming and event activities.
  • Develops, supervises, and implements interpretive programs.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of recreation and parks nature programming.
  • Assists in planning, organizing and conducting diversified nature and leisure programs.
  • Attends monthly community meetings.
  • Patrols Baltimore County parklands and facilities by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to maintain public safety and to ensure compliance with rules, regulations and ordinances.
  • May issue warnings and citations.
  • Assists law enforcement agencies in crime prevention and reporting, search and rescue operations, parking and traffic regulations, and accident investigation.
  • Maintains contact with other Department of Recreation & Parks employees and the county police department.
  • Investigates violations, prepare reports, secure evidence and testify in court.
  • Receives training as a first responder.
  • May render assistance and first aid prior to arrival of emergency medical personnel.
  • Notifies Bureau of Animal Control of injured or deceased wildlife.
  • Assists Park patrons and visitors by answering questions relative to park amenities, programs, and rules and regulations.
  • Cooperates with community and service groups in clean up and park beautification projects.
  • Provides assistance to other park staff in areas such as crowd control and traffic control.
  • Ensures proper usage and care of facilities requiring a permit and resolve permit disputes.
  • May provide security at special events.
  • Assists, as necessary, with maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Inspects site to ensure that facilities and equipment are in proper condition and that safety standards are maintained.

Assists with various maintenance duties essential to the operation of the park functions of each position in the class.

Qualifications

Training and Experience
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences, history, or a natural resources or history related field;
Plus
One-year of experience in forest or park management, recreation, or natural resources management, law enforcement, or preparing, developing or delivering programs that interpret natural, historical cultural, or recreational features.
OR
Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park management, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences or a natural resource related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

(Experience as described in Examples of Essential Duties may be substituted on a year-for year basis for the required education.)

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.

Employees are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System (ERS), with very limited exceptions.
