Position Title: Head Custodian II
Pay Grade: 9 Period of Employment: 12 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: School Administrators, Facility and Maintenance Director
General Responsibilities: Supervises and assists in the sanitation of an intermediate or middle school building and grounds, ensuring safe, clean, and orderly conditions.
Essential Duties:

- Supervises school custodial staff.
- Coordinates and approves leave for custodial staff using the Absence Management System.
- Administers training to the custodial staff, including an annual review of the custodial handbook.
- Maintains interior of school. Ensures the following tasks are completed:
- Sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, seals and buffs floors, vacuums and shampoos the rugs and carpets, dusts and washes of windows and other surfaces.
- Maintains sanitary conditions.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area/custodial closets at all times.
- Repairs school furniture and equipment.
- Maintains heating, lighting, and electrical controls.
- Maintains exterior of school. Ensures the following tasks are completed:
- Maintains landscaping around the building.
- Assists in snow/ice removal from sidewalks and parking lots during inclement weather.
- Monitors dumpsters and reports problems to maintenance.
- Follows directions and maintains open lines of communication with the building administrator.
- Ensures staff compliance with slip resistant shoes and cold weather gear.
- Ensures OSHA and SDS /Right to Know training compliance.
- Reports required building and equipment maintenance repairs utilizing the MCPS work order system.
- Inspects safety, sanitation, and fire hazards and report to appropriate person.
- Prepares and requests supply order quarterly, receive custodial deliveries and checks and processes invoice while working with the school bookkeeper.
- Operates the school security systems and fire safety systems.
- Contributes to the custodial staff performance evaluations.
- Maintains awareness of energy conservation and makes suggestions of methods and procedures to conserve energy.
- Secures school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock and secure building at end of shift. Report any issues.
- Establishes and maintains effective and positive working relationships with co-workers, staff, and the general public.
- Stays current with best practices and safety techniques.
- Trains shift supervisor to assume responsibilities of head custodian when necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective use of the school division email system.
- Utilizes technology.
- Ensures staff is knowledgeable of resources and reporting needs.
- Follows and understands written and oral instructions from the building administrators.
- Knowledge of routine custodial operations; ordering proper cleaning supplies and maintaining and following good business inventory practices.
- Operates various types of building maintenance equipment.
- Moderate lifting and/or moving of furniture; climb ladders.
- Knowledge of fire and health safety involved in the care of the building.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of any task to remain in compliance with state and federal guidelines/laws.
- OSHA training as required.
Requisite Education and Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Previous custodial experience in a school setting preferred.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
