Position Summary

The Assessor conducts assessments for birthing facilities being considered for Baby-Friendly Designation and/or Re-Designation. Per the assessment, the Assessor gathers specific information through interviews, review of materials and observations, then compiles a templated report based upon the current US Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria.

Preferred method of assessment is in-person and BFUSA assessors are required to participate in in-person assessments and/or virtual assessment models.

Essential Functions/Capabilities

  • Travel to birthing facilities located in various locations throughout the U.S. and its territories to conduct assessments as assigned
  • Conduct on-site and virtual facility assessments following the current established protocols, to evaluate whether the facility has met all the criteria for Baby-Friendly Designation.
  • Thoroughly and accurately gather data at facilities:
    • collect information on how well a facility is implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as per current US GEC
    • conduct interviews with administrators, health care providers, staff and mothers
    • review facility materials
    • objectively document observations and facts
    • conduct investigative inquiries as necessary
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to elicit information through active listening with multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Complete all pre-assessment and post-assessment requirements, as per the current established protocols. This includes reviewing facility specific documents prior to assessment and submitting all administrative and financial documentation in a timely manner to BFUSA post assessment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date schedule of availability for conducting assessments (4-6 months in advance at a minimum) using the on-line mechanism established by BFUSA.
  • Be available for three (3) to four (4) days in a row to conduct on-site assessments on a monthly basis at minimum.
  • Comply with established assessment travel arrangements policy and procedures and have the ability to take initiative in order to efficiently and effectively manage travel complications.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the GEC for each of the "Ten Steps" and the International Code upon which the assessment is based by utilizing resources provided by BFUSA.
  • Participate in monthly assessor conference calls.
  • Work collaboratively with assigned co-Assessor to complete all aspects of the assessment.
  • Communicate with the Assessment Coordinator on a regular basis about any work-related issues that arise.
  • Work collaboratively with co-Assessor and Accreditation office staff.
  • Be compliant with prevalent health requirements for healthcare workers.
  • Must be flexible in terms of working hours and must communicate availability and need for leave of absence in timely manner; must be available for participation in corporate orientation and education.
  • Adhere to Baby-Friendly written information security policies (WISP), including HIPAA/PHI, HITECH, PII, other confidentiality policies, and protocols on reporting suspected breaches or disclosures.
  • Self-identify and report to BFUSA any potential conflicts of interest per BFUSA policy.
  • Follow facility specific policies and requirements as appropriate.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all BFUSA communication requests; check BFUSA email at least twice per week.
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion of all facility information and sensitive BFUSA information.
  • Support the mission and vision of BFUSA through positive engagements with facility and BFUSA personnel. Maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/License/Experience/Technology Requirements

  • Current RN licensure with at least five (5) years clinical experience in a hospital/birthing center maternity unit. Licensure must be maintained and kept current.
  • Successful completion of a 45-hour breastfeeding management course is required; IBCLC is a preferred certification and CLC is accepted.
  • Lactation certifications must be retained and/or evidence of 35 hours of CERPS within a 5-year period of time.
  • Proof of current valid and unrestricted U.S. driver's license, clean driving record and a proof of auto insurance may be requested.
  • Immunizations up to date (proof may be required).
  • Drug test results may be required.
  • BFUSA may assign a laptop exclusive to BFUSA and assessment duties.
  • Regular access to personal cell phone with reliable service, ability to take photos/screen shots for travel documents, in accordance with BFUSA contracts and policies. Secure and private internet access.
  • Private space in home to conduct virtual interviews when assigned to a fully virtual or partially virtual assessment.

Physical Demands Of The Job

  • Must be physically capable of extensive travel to facilities located around U.S. territory (multiple time zones) for 3-4 days in a row, including overnights and weekends.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs/ramps, sit in confined spaces, bend, stoop down, kneel, perform repetitive motions using hands to fingers, handle, reach with hands/arms and overhead; lift/carry/pull/push/move objects up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds; perform other physical activities as needed.
  • Ability to endure the stress of traveling (by various means of transportation, such as plane, car, bus, taxi, train, etc.), including time zone changes, agility to multitask.
  • Possess stamina and endurance with the capability to work long hours in a day.
  • Ability to drive a car.
  • Acute near/mid vision and hearing.
  • Ability to clearly and frequently communicate (speaking, reading and hearing).
  • Ability to observe, in real time and without slowing or otherwise interrupting the progress of all applicable types of ongoing health care treatment (e.g., including emergency treatment, and other extreme situations, etc.).

Work Environment

  • Various conditions in many different settings, including healthcare facilities, hotel, travel modes, home office are expected
  • Exposure to difficult and extreme environmental conditions is common while traveling or onsite:
    • Dust, chemicals, poor ventilation, odors, allergens and infectious diseases, loud noises, vibrations, temperature changes, environmental hazards, and emergency situations, etc. are expected in related environments.
