What are the responsibilities and job description for the Audio Visual Install Technician position at AZP Installs?
Overview
AZP Installs is seeking an experienced Audio Visual Install Technician to design, install, configure, and service residential and light-commercial low-voltage systems across the Salt Lake City metro area. This is a customer-facing, field-based role for someone who can be dispatched to a job site and complete a professional installation independently or while directing an apprentice-level helper. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills across home theater, audio, surveillance, networking, motorized shades, and lighting control with the polish and communication to represent AZP Installs directly to high-end clients.
Duties
- Install, terminate, configure, and troubleshoot low-voltage systems including home theaters, distributed/whole-home audio, surveillance and CCTV, structured networking (Wi-Fi, switches, racks), motorized window shades, and lighting control.
- Program, integrate, and commission Control4 and other home-automation platforms; bind devices, build/adjust drivers, and verify reliable end-user operation.
- Pull, route, and dress low-voltage cabling (Cat6/6A, coax, speaker, HDMI/fiber) to a clean, professional standard in both new-construction and finished/retrofit environments.
- Mount and calibrate displays, projectors, screens, speakers, racks, and equipment; perform basic audio/video calibration and network configuration.
- Run service and trouble calls — diagnose and resolve issues on existing systems, often on systems installed by others.
- Interface directly with homeowners, builders, designers, general contractors, and commercial clients on site in a professional, respectful manner.
- Lead and mentor an apprentice-level helper on site; delegate tasks and verify quality of work.
- Read and work from plans, scopes, and equipment schedules; document work, as-builts, and changes accurately.
- Maintain a clean, safe job site and protect finished surfaces in high-end homes.
- Manage truck stock, tools, and materials; communicate material needs to the office ahead of time.
Requirements
- 2 years of hands-on experience installing residential and/or commercial AV and low-voltage systems.
- Working knowledge across most of the following: home theater, home audio, surveillance, networking, motorized shades, and lighting control.
- Hands-on experience with Control4 (or comparable platforms such as Savant, Crestron, URC, or RTI) and home-automation integration.
- Ability to run a job independently — plan the day, execute the install, and deliver a working, client-ready system.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills and a professional, presentable appearance.
- Comfort terminating low-voltage connectors and configuring network equipment (IP addressing, switches, access points).
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Able to lift 50 lbs, work on ladders/lifts, and perform the physical demands of field installation.
- Able to pass a background check (required for in-home and commercial work).
Preferred / Bonus Qualifications
- Control4 certification (or willingness to certify), and other manufacturer certifications (Lutron, Araknis/SnapAV, Ubiquiti, Sony/Sonos, etc.).
- Experience with Lutron or Control4 lighting and motorized shade systems (e.g., Lutron, Hunter Douglas, QMotion).
- Lutron, OvrC, or network-management platform familiarity for remote support.
- Experience working in high-end custom homes and coordinating with builders and designers.
