What are the responsibilities and job description for the Founding Software Engineer position at AXION?
AXION is a deep-tech startup building non-invasive brain-computer interfaces. For millions with motor impairments, simple digital interactions like clicking a button or sending a message can take painfully long minutes. Our first product, AXION Click, lets people control an iPad using nothing but their eyes and brainwaves. We discovered and patented Stimulus Preceding Negativity (SPN) - a neural signal that detects the intent to click non-invasively. Combined with eye-tracking, SPN enables effortless and seamless interactions with computers.
This isn't just assistive tech, it's superhuman. We are creating the foundation for the next era of human-computer interaction. We are a team of passionate researchers and engineers developing technology that doesn't just solve today's accessibility challenges but transforms how everyone interacts with digital devices.
About the Role
As AXION's Founding Software Engineer, you will own our entire software stack, from the companion app that users interact with daily to the embedded systems running on the device itself. You'll work at the intersection of hardware and software, building polished user experiences on top of cutting-edge neural interface technology. This role requires someone who can ship production-quality code and thrive in a fast-moving startup setting.
What You'll Do
- Develop our iOS companion app from the ground up, creating intuitive experiences for users with motor limitations
- Write and maintain embedded software for our hardware platform, integrating sensor data, signal processing pipelines, and device communication
- Build robust Python infrastructure for data processing, model integration, and backend services
- Collaborate closely with our hardware and ML teams to ensure seamless integration across the full system
- Own features end-to-end: scoping, architecture, implementation, testing, and iteration based on user feedback
- Establish engineering best practices and lay the technical foundation as we scale the team
What We're Looking For
Required:
- 4 years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong iOS development skills (Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit)
- Proficiency in Python for systems work, scripting, or data pipelines
- Experience with embedded Linux development or low-level systems programming
- Comfort working across the stack and picking up new technologies quickly
- Proven ability to ship software independently in resource-constrained environments
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego approach
Preferred:
- Background in computer vision, eye-tracking, and sensor integration
- Experience in early-stage startups
Compensation Range: $130K - $180K
Equity: 0.5-1%
Salary : $130,000 - $180,000
