Opening Statement

The Eugene Waldorf School is looking for a Lead Early Childhood After School Care Teacher for our early childhood program for the 2026-27 school year.

We are looking for a compassionate, enthusiastic, imaginative, nurturing person to join our group of early childhood teachers who oversee the holding of 2.5 – 6 year old children; a creative teacher who speaks to the children in imaginative pictures, who has a connection with nature and who is not averse to rainy weather!

We are seeking a teacher who can establish a healthy rhythm with warmth and joy. The anticipated schedule will be Monday – Friday 12:00 – 6:00 pm plus additional time for class prep/planning; parent teacher conference days and break care days 9 am – 3 pm, meetings and inservice training as needed or planned.

Established in 1980, our school has deep roots in the local community and provides a comprehensive Waldorf education to students in preschool through eighth grade. Our four-acre campus is nestled in the southwest hills of Eugene, Oregon which is a vibrant, artistic, and eco-conscious community. Eugene is located at the south end of the Willamette Valley with a rich cultural life and offers an abundance of natural beauty and outdoor recreation in the Pacific Northwest.

Essential Job Duties

Teach a classroom of 10-20 mixed age students (2.5 – 6 years old) in the after school care program according to Waldorf principles and applicable state licensing requirements for child care programs.

Provide child care for a mixed age group of 10-20 students (pk – 5th grade) during fall and winter parent-teacher conferences.

Work with one or more teachers to support the group of children in the program

Work cooperatively with colleagues to uphold the mission, integrity, and values of the school

Prepare classroom and materials before the start of the school year and each day school is in session

Create and carry out a well-planned age-appropriate Waldorf-based after school care curriculum including story telling, singing songs, practical and artistic work, puppet shows, seasonal and birthday celebrations, etc.

Assume full responsibility for children during the afternoon

Participate and supervise students in emergency drills: fire, earthquake, safety threat, etc.

Provide first aid as needed

Fill out injury reports when needed and notify Director of any serious/reportable injuries immediately

Fill out medication logs when needed

Supervise nap time

Prepare, supervise and participate in snack time

Supervise indoor activities and ensure the room is free of safety hazards

Supervise outdoor activities and ensure the play yard is free of safety hazards

Maintain accurate daily attendance records for students and staff

Order or request items needed for the classroom while being conscious of the classroom budget

Maintain close communication with parents, within appropriate boundaries

Attend and contribute to outreach and school events

Prepare and participate in seasonal celebrations: Michaelmas, Halloween Journey, Lantern Walk, Spiral of Light, Winter Celebration, May Celebration, etc.

Read faculty meeting and section meeting notes weekly

Attend meetings as needed

Participate in committee work

Participate in ongoing professional development, including working with a mentor

Have regular meetings with the assistant teacher to check in and provide mentoring

Complete tasks required by administration in relation to recordkeeping, policies, procedures, etc.

Qualifications

Waldorf early childhood teaching certificate, bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development, or another related field

Two years or more of early childhood teaching experience preferably in a Waldorf school

Background check clearance through the Oregon Background Registry

Pediatric first aid & CPR training

Food handler training

Required online training through the Department of Early Learning and Care

Fifteen hours of continuing education annually (8 hours must be in child development)

Commitment to excellence in teaching, family education, self-development, and collegial cooperation.

Ability to work and communicate well with colleagues

Ability to work and communicate well with children and family members

Ability to send and receive email using Gmail

Knowledge of, or ability to learn, various work-related computer programs (Google Workspace, Ravenna school database, Gusto payroll software, etc.)

Attend all announced in-service training (typically the last week of August, one week during February break, and the week after school gets out in mid-June)

The willingness and ability to supervise outdoor play every day in all weather conditions

Employment Details

Position Start Date: August 1, 2026

FTE: Full time salary exempt (1.0 FTE)

Compensation: Rate of pay will be determined based on education and experience but the anticipated annual salary range is $40,666 – $43,266.

Benefits: Simple IRA with 2% employer contribution, tuition remission commensurate with FTE, free child care for enrolled children, professional development funds, five paid sick days, three paid personal days.
