The Senior R&D Engineer with polymer science fundamentals interested in advancing their career within Avient's Specialty Engineered Materials is responsible for designing and conducting experiments toward supporting specialty product lines in the wire and cable space. The candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to commercialize these products and support the business by identifying growth opportunities.
The ideal candidate will have a clear understanding of wire and cable formulations in the building and construction, healthcare and other industries. They should have a working understanding of the regulatory requirements in this area and be able to work with regulatory agencies to gain qualification listings for newly developed technologies.Responsible for designing and conducting experiments toward the development or improvement of custom polymer compounds.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops and/or leads development of products adhering to customer specifications, quality, and operational goals and standards.
- Conducts literature and patent search to guide experimentation.
- Conducts and troubleshoots materials testing, developing new testing/approaches if needed.
- Contributes to product platform development through application of statistical experimental design, product testing, and data analysis.
- Identifies material and other functional specifications to meet customer requirements.
- Supports marketing and sales through development of product and application data.
- Serves as technical resource across businesses.
- Partners with manufacturing resources to establish quality and testing conditions for new materials.
- Presents technical work to customers and various levels of management as needed.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a related field is required
- Ph.D. in a related field is preferred (materials science, polymer science, polymer engineering, etc.)
- 5 years of related experience is preferred.
Additional Qualifications
- Extensive experience with wire and cable insulation formulation, crosslinkable systems, and extrusion processes is preferred.
- Working knowledge of polymer structure-property relationships
- Comfortable with polymer characterization/testing techniques
