Avidity Corporation is looking for an experienced, hands-on CNC Programmer / Setup Machinist who understands machining from the print through production.
This is not an operator-only or desk-programming position. We are looking for someone who can take a part, understand what needs to be done, develop the machining process, program it in Mastercam, select the appropriate tooling, perform the complete machine setup and workholding changeover, prove out the process, and help transition the job into efficient production.
Our work includes both CNC milling and turning across a variety of materials, part sizes, quantities, and levels of complexity. The ideal person understands not just how to run a CNC machine, but how and why metal cuts the way it does — tooling, speeds and feeds, workholding, tool life, surface finish, chip control, and process efficiency.
Just as important, we are looking for someone who works well with others. Once a process is established, our operators need to understand how to run it successfully, manage tool wear and offsets, recognize problems, and know when to ask for help.
Responsibilities
- Program CNC mills and lathes using Mastercam.
- Set up, prove out, and operate CNC machining centers and CNC lathes, including hands-on installation and changeover of tooling, vises, fixtures, jaws, chucks, collet systems, and other workholding as required.
- Read and interpret prints, tolerances, GD&T, and manufacturing requirements.
- Determine machining sequence, workholding, tooling, and setup strategy.
- Select and recommend appropriate cutting tools, inserts, drills, holders, and related tooling.
- Establish and optimize speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and machining parameters based on the material, tooling, machine, and operation.
- Understand the machining characteristics of aluminum, carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, and other common materials.
- Troubleshoot tool wear, chatter, burrs, poor finish, dimensional variation, chip-control problems, and other machining issues.
- Use micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators, and other inspection equipment to verify parts.
- Make appropriate program, tool, wear, and work-offset adjustments.
- Improve existing programs and processes where opportunities exist to reduce cycle time, improve tool life, or make production more reliable.
- Establish processes that can be successfully operated by production personnel.
- Work directly with operators to explain tooling, offset management, tool-life expectations, inspection requirements, and what to watch for during a production run.
- Assist with general machining and production needs when required.
What We're Looking For
- Strong CNC machining background with demonstrated setup and programming ability.
- Mastercam experience is important.
- Experience with both CNC mills and CNC lathes is strongly preferred.
- Ability to independently develop a machining process from a print or model.
- Strong understanding of cutting tools, materials, speeds and feeds, and practical machining fundamentals.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems at the machine rather than simply work around them.
- Comfortable making decisions and recommendations concerning tooling and machining strategy.
- Experience with Mazak, Fanuc, Haas, or similar CNC controls is beneficial.
- Experience with additional machining processes or equipment is a plus.
