About the Job
As an Accounting Specialist, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of our accounting department while developing a broad understanding of the full accounting cycle. You will own essential accounting functions such as accounts receivable and sales tax administration and work closely with the CFO and accounting team to support month-end close reconciliations, budgeting, reporting, and process improvement initiatives. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both doing the work and improving the work. As you develop your skills and demonstrate increasing responsibility, you'll have the opportunity to grow into progressively more advanced accounting roles within our department.
Key Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Manage core accounting operations including accounts receivable, customer billing, cash application, and maintenance of customer and vendor accounting records.
- Administer sales tax compliance by maintaining exemption documentation, supporting Avalara, and ensuring accurate tax treatment of customer transactions.
- Support the monthly accounting cycle by preparing journal entries, reconciling assigned accounts, and maintaining accurate financial records.
- Partners with teams across the organization to resolve accounting issues, improve data accuracy, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
- Continuously improving accounting processes by identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, strengthen internal controls, and take on new responsibilities as the department grows.
Skills & Abilities
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills are required, including formulas (such as VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP), sorting, filtering, formatting, and manipulating exported data to support accounting analysis and reporting.
- Ability to analyze accounting data, identify discrepancies, reconcile differences, and prepare clear, organized workpapers.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and consistently meet deadlines.
- A proactive, self-motivated approach with a willingness to take ownership of work and continually expand responsibilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a desire to improve processes and increase efficiency.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, service-oriented approach to supporting customers, vendors, and coworkers.
- Ability to learn new systems and concepts quickly and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a small accounting team.
- Experience with ERP systems is preferred; experience with Pentagon is a plus.
- Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism when handling financial and personnel information.
- Associate’s degree in accounting, a bookkeeping certificate, or equivalent accounting experience required. Candidates currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting are encouraged to apply.
