1. Overview

1.1. The Mechanical Technician supports the Mechanical Engineer and Mechanical Manager by executing hands-on mechanical tasks related to equipment assembly, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. This role is vital in ensuring the quality and efficiency of mechanical systems used in automation and industrial operations.

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1. Mechanical Assembly

2.1.1. Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to assemble components and systems.

2.1.2. Assemble subassemblies and complex mechanical systems to exact specifications.

2.1.3. Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment (e.g., calipers, micrometers, torque wrenches).

2.1.4. Ensure alignment, torque specifications, and fit are compliant with engineering standards.

2.2. Preventive and Routine Maintenance

2.2.1. Conduct scheduled maintenance and inspections on mechanical equipment to extend service life and ensure performance.

2.2.2. Lubricate moving parts, replace worn or damaged components, and adjust settings.

2.2.3. Keep accurate records of maintenance activities and parts usage.

2.2.4. Identify patterns or recurring issues and report findings to the Mechanical Engineer.

2.3. Equipment Installation and Alignment

2.3.1. Support the setting up of mechanical systems both in-house and at customer sites.

2.3.2. Install components, frames, and assemblies in accordance with site plans and technical instructions.

2.3.3. Perform precision alignments using appropriate tools (e.g., laser alignment systems, dial indicators).

2.3.4. Test system movement, fit, and function under simulated or live conditions.

2.4. Troubleshooting and Repairs

2.4.1. Diagnose mechanical failures quickly and implement corrective action to minimize downtime.

2.4.2. Identify root causes by inspecting mechanical wear, stress points, and system output.

2.4.3. Repair or replace parts such as belts, gears, bearings, valves, and seals

2.4.4. Validate repairs through testing and communicate outcomes with the engineering team.

2.5. Prototype Support and Engineering Collaboration

2.5.1. Work alongside Mechanical Engineers during prototype builds or new equipment development.

2.5.2. Assemble prototype units from initial concept models or design revisions.

2.5.3. Provide real-time input on ease of assembly, component fit, and potential design improvements.

2.5.4. Assist in functional testing and documentation of early-stage equipment.

2.6. Safety Compliance and Housekeeping

2.6.1. Always maintain a safe and organized work environment.

2.6.2. Follow company and OSHA guidelines on PPE, tool usage, and mechanical safety.

2.6.3. Participate in safety briefings and report hazards immediately.

2.6.4. Keep work areas clean and ensure tools are properly maintained and stored.

2.7. Documentation and Reporting

2.7.1. Keep detailed records of all mechanical work performed.

2.7.2. Document assembly steps, maintenance activities, and repair outcomes.

2.7.3. Use internal systems or paper logs to record part numbers, torque values, and inspection results.

2.7.4. Ensure records are clear and accessible for auditing or warranty purposes.

2.8. Commissioning and Site Support

2.8.1. Assist with final system setup, testing, and client handoff.

2.8.2. Participate in machine startup, tuning, and functional verification processes.

2.8.3. Work with engineers, electricians, and software teams to achieve full system readiness.

2.8.4. Train customers on basic mechanical usage or perform final signoffs as required.

2.9. Inventory and Tool Management

2.9.1. Support part usage tracking and tool organization.

2.9.2. Monitor inventory levels of fasteners, fittings, lubricants, and consumables.

2.9.3. Notify supervisors when stock is low or new tools are needed.

2.9.4. Assist in tool calibration tracking and tool crib organization.

2.10. Team Participation and Continuous Improvement

2.10.1. Engage actively in team meetings and process optimization initiatives.

2.10.2. Attend shift handovers, safety briefings, and project coordination sessions.

2.10.3. Offer suggestions on improving build processes, part designs, or equipment reliability.

2.10.4. Take part in cross-training or skill development sessions as needed.

3. Requirements

3.1. Education

3.1.1. Associate’s degree in Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related technical field preferred.

3.2. Experience

3.2.1. 2 years of hands-on experience in mechanical assembly, maintenance, or industrial machinery.

3.2.2. Experience working in a manufacturing or automation environment is a plus.

3.3. Required Skills

3.3.1. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and schematics.

3.3.2. Strong mechanical aptitude with familiarity in tools, fasteners, and fabrication practices.

3.3.3. Skilled in diagnosing mechanical problems and implementing effective solutions.

3.3.4. Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions.

3.3.5. Capable of working independently or as part of a team in fast-paced environments.

3.3.6. Basic understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical power transmission.

3.3.7. Proficiency in documenting work performed using digital and physical logs.

3.4. Certifications

3.4.1. OSHA 10/30 certification preferred.

3.4.2. Forklift or lift operation certification is a plus.

3.4.3. Any relevant manufacturer-specific mechanical or safety certifications are a plus.

3.5. Preferred

3.5.1. Familiarity with automation systems, robotic cells, or CNC machinery.

3.5.2. Experience supporting engineers in prototype or custom equipment builds.

6. Work Environment

6.1. Workshops and on-site environments, often involving mechanical tools, machinery, and lifting. Must adhere to PPE and safety standards.

8. Responsibilities to Avoid

8.1. Administrative Tasks

8.1.1. Technicians should not be responsible for administrative paperwork unrelated to maintenance or repair documentation.

8.1.2. Office or clerical tasks are outside the scope of this hands-on role.

8.2. Engineering Design

8.2.1. While input is encouraged, mechanical technicians should not independently make design decisions without engineer approval.
