Position Summary:
The Externship Coordinator at Austin Medical Assistant Training is responsible for developing and managing externship placements for medical assisting students. This position ensures that students receive high-quality, hands-on clinical experiences that meet program objectives and industry standards. The Coordinator serves as a liaison between students, faculty, and healthcare partners to support student success and maintain strong community relationships.
Key Responsibilities:
Externship Site Management
Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with local healthcare facilities, clinics, and hospitals to secure externship placements.
Ensure all externship sites meet program and accreditation requirements.
Negotiate and maintain current affiliation agreements and contracts with externship partners.
Conduct periodic site visits to assess quality, compliance, and satisfaction.
Student Placement & Support
Match students with appropriate externship sites based on skill level, career goals, and site availability.
Conduct externship orientation sessions to prepare students for clinical training.
Monitor student attendance, progress, and performance throughout the externship period.
Provide support and guidance to students and site supervisors to address any issues that arise.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate externship records including student files, evaluations, timesheets, and site documentation.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and Texas Workforce Commission regulations.
Collect and evaluate student and site feedback to continuously improve the externship program.
Prepare reports for the Program Director and accrediting agencies as required.
Partnership Development
Build and nurture professional relationships with externship sites to expand opportunities for students.
Represent Austin Medical Assistant Training at networking and community events to promote partnerships.
Coordinate appreciation events or recognition initiatives for externship partners.
Qualifications:
Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare, education, or related field.
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience in externship coordination, career services, or clinical supervision.
Experience in a medical or healthcare education environment preferred.
Skills:
Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
Knowledge of medical assisting scope of practice and clinical workflows.
Ability to multitask and manage multiple externship placements simultaneously.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems.
Work Environment:
Primarily on-site at Austin Medical Assistant Training with local travel to externship sites as needed.
May require occasional evening or weekend hours to support student or site needs.
