About the Role

The Behavior Support Specialist provides compliance oversight and supports staff across departments in the effective use of behavior support strategies. This role includes direct consumer support, consultation, and training to ensure accurate implementation of behavior supports and adherence to Behavior Treatment Plan Review Committee (BTPRC) requirements. The specialist works closely with the Clinical Service Director (CSD) to analyze data, adjust program components based on outcomes, and assist with the rollout of new behavior support initiatives.

Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, leadership, and a strong commitment to promoting independence, integration, and recovery. Individuals with lived experience with mental illness, intellectual/developmental disabilities, or substance use disorders are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the agency expert on all behavior supports.
  • Oversee and maintain BTPRC data and documentation.
  • Train and guide staff in the effective use of approved behavior support methods.
  • Monitor staff competency and support professional development.
  • Prepare data reports following CSD and BTPRC standards.
  • Ensure quality and compliance in training, documentation, and data collection.
  • Maintain program fidelity and readiness for BTPRC and audit requests.
  • Ensure adherence to agency policies and performance standards related to behavior support.
  • Represent the agency on assigned community committees.
  • Develop outcome measures and produce monthly reporting.
  • Organize documentation for audits, CARF accreditation, MDHHS, and other agencies.
  • Provide leadership within program areas and cross-train staff when needed.
  • Assist the CSD in evaluating service needs and planning future service delivery.
  • Complete assessments, Pre‑Plans, service reviews, and addendums as required.
  • Provide direct consumer contact as outlined in Plans of Service.
  • Document services, complete billing, and maintain records in compliance with Medicaid and agency standards.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to meet consumer needs.
  • Travel within the service area and occasionally statewide.
  • Participate in emergency services (if credentialed) and work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, as needed.
  • Support staff compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field accepted by the State of Michigan for Care Manager roles.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with individuals with mental health conditions.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license, required auto insurance, acceptable driving record, and legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and travel throughout the Board’s service area and other parts of the state.
