This role focuses on teaching beginner conversational Spanish to adults in a dynamic environment. Candidates should possess at least two years of experience in lesson development and Spanish instruction. Help us empower learners to communicate effectively and confidently in a new tongue. The hiring rate for this role is $22.00/hour. The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, April 19, 2026. The Spanish Language Instructor teaches beginner-level conversational Spanish to adults. The instructor will lead engaging classes covering essential greetings, introductions, numbers, and everyday vocabulary. This role helps participants build a strong foundation for basic conversations in Spanish. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Provides instruction in speaking, reading, writing and understanding the Spanish language, as well as lessons in Spanish literature and culture for adult learners Assists with the development and teaching of curriculum suited for the class description Communicates in a timely manner via email or phone Provides a positive atmosphere, in which one maintains good classroom control, takes attendance, hands out written materials, and keeps class informed of current information and schedules Responsible for on-site communication with recreation center staff and relaying information back to the supervisor May perform additional duties as assigned This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: High School Diploma / GED Experience: A minimum of two years’ experience teaching Spanish and supporting learners in developing foundational speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, including the ability to speak, read, and communicate effectively in Spanish. Experience developing and implementing lesson plans and hands-on experience teaching subject matter. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with adults Knowledge: Effective teaching methods and practices Knowledge of Spanish literature and culture Skills: Strong interpersonal and managerial skills Skill in the use of windows-based programs to allow for effective teaching methods. Strong customer service skills Abilities: Build rapport and maintain positive relationships with participants, staff, and volunteers. Lead structured lessons while keeping sessions fun and interactive. Adjust teaching methods to meet individual needs and learning preferences. Encourage participants to practice speaking without fear or embarrassment. Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and culturally sensitive environment. Ability to apply basics of the activity to the level of capacity to teach these concepts. WORKING CONDITIONS Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Light to moderate physical work, ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds. May require some lifting, carrying, walking & standing. Occasional hand/eye coordination, vision to ready & interpret materials. Frequent speech communication & hearing to maintain communication with class participants & staff. Work Environment: Works primarily indoors indoor in a clean, comfortable environment instructing a program. Equipment Used: Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel. Ability to operate a laptop and projector system to assist in teaching methods. This role may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment. The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
