What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Controller - Construction position at Atlas Search?
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing construction organization. This individual will oversee all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, job cost accounting, budgeting, cash flow management, and compliance while partnering closely with executive leadership and operations to drive profitability across multiple projects.
The ideal candidate has strong construction accounting experience, expertise in percentage-of-completion accounting, and a deep understanding of project financial management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting and finance operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and month-end close.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage construction job costing, including labor, subcontractor, equipment, materials, and overhead allocations.
- Monitor project budgets, committed costs, change orders, work-in-progress (WIP), and project profitability.
- Prepare and review monthly WIP schedules and revenue recognition using percentage-of-completion (ASC 606) methodology.
- Develop project forecasts and collaborate with project managers to identify cost overruns, margin erosion, and financial risks.
- Oversee cash flow forecasting, treasury management, and banking relationships.
- Manage billing processes, including AIA billing, retainage, lien waivers, and collections.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and interactions with external auditors, tax advisors, and insurance providers.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including sales and use tax and payroll tax requirements.
- Develop and improve internal controls, accounting policies, and financial processes to support continued growth.
- Lead budgeting and forecasting processes while providing financial analysis and KPI reporting to executive leadership.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
- Support strategic initiatives including acquisitions, financing, ERP implementations, and operational process improvements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
- 8–15 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in the construction industry.
- Experience serving as Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager within a general contractor, specialty contractor, developer, or construction management company.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction job costing
- Percentage-of-completion accounting
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- AIA billing
- Retainage accounting
- Revenue recognition (ASC 606)
- GAAP financial reporting
- Experience managing audits, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow.
- Proficiency with construction ERP systems such as CMiC, Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, Procore, Foundation, Jonas, or similar platforms.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with Power BI or other reporting tools is a plus
Salary : $140,000 - $180,000
