ATHLETICS - SLMS BOYS BASKETBALL COACH
 
 

Job Goal: 

To provide leadership, instruction, and supervision for the South Lake Middle School Boys Basketball Program while promoting skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, academic success, and positive citizenship. The coach will create a safe and supportive environment that fosters personal growth, self-discipline, confidence, and enjoyment of athletic participation.

 

 
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Recognized ability to serve as a positive role model and motivator for student-athletes.
  • Previous coaching and/or playing experience in basketball preferred; middle school coaching experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to organize, supervise, and develop a successful athletic program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball rules, regulations, strategies, and skill development.
  • Established knowledge of the fundamental and technical aspects of basketball.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community members.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Completion of MHSAA Coaches Advancement Program (CAP) requirements or willingness to complete required training.
  • Successful completion of all district-required background checks and compliance requirements.
  • Must abide by the South Lake Schools Coaches Handbook and the overall District athletic philosophy.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent, Athletic Director, or designee may find appropriate and acceptable.

                              
Performance Responsibilities & Duties Include:

  • Develop a sense of community that welcomes, supports, and celebrates the diversity of all student-athletes.
  • Understand and follow all rules and guidelines established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), league regulations, and South Lake Schools policies.
  • Uphold the Athlete Code of Conduct and conduct themselves in accordance with the MHSAA Athletic Code for Coaches.
  • Serve as a positive role model and maintain professional conduct at all times.
  • Promote sportsmanship, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, and respect among student-athletes.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, games, transportation, and team activities.
  • Ensure that no student-athlete is left unsupervised or unattended during or following athletic activities.
  • Verify with Human Resources that all coaches, assistants, volunteers, and guests have appropriate clearance prior to participating in any athletic activity.
  • Follow all directives from District administrators and the Athletic Director.
  • Establish positive working relationships with teachers, counselors, and staff to support student-athletes experiencing academic, social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
  • Encourage academic success, regular attendance, and positive citizenship among all student-athletes.
  • Teach basketball fundamentals, techniques, strategies, and sports-specific skills necessary for individual and team success.
  • Organize and direct all aspects of the basketball program.
  • Attend required clinics, meetings, and professional development opportunities to remain current with coaching techniques, safety procedures, and MHSAA regulations.
  • Adhere to all District, league, and MHSAA regulations regarding athletic participation.
  • Organize and supervise tryouts, practices, skill development sessions, camps, and other team activities as appropriate.
  • Implement injury prevention practices and follow all procedures related to student-athlete injuries, parent notification, and accident reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with concussion awareness, heat illness prevention, and all student-athlete safety requirements.
  • Verify student-athlete eligibility in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic performance and eligibility throughout the season.
  • Provide the Principal and Athletic Director with written team expectations and rules prior to the season and update them as needed.
  • Communicate team expectations and program information to student-athletes and parents.
  • Foster open and consistent communication with families regarding schedules, expectations, and program activities.
  • Instill respect for school property, facilities, equipment, teammates, opponents, and officials.
  • Inventory, distribute, collect, and maintain district-issued athletic equipment.
  • Prepare athletic equipment for storage, maintenance, or reconditioning at the conclusion of the season.
  • Evaluate officials and complete required reports when applicable.
  • Coordinate all transportation needs through the Athletic Department.
  • Accompany the team to all contests and travel with student-athletes whenever district transportation is provided.
  • Directly supervise student-athletes at all home and away athletic events.
  • Properly secure facilities and equipment following practices and contests.
  • Maintain accurate records, rosters, participation forms, and required athletic documentation.
  • Report scores and related information as required by the Athletic Department.
  • Maintain positive public relations with students, families, staff, officials, booster organizations, community members, and the media.
  • Support student participation and success throughout all South Lake athletic programs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, district initiatives, and athletic events as requested by the Athletic Director.

  • Employees shall comply with all Board policies and applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), applicable non-discrimination requirements, and related educational regulations. 
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holiday periods, and other times as required by the athletic schedule.
  • Must be able to supervise students in a variety of athletic settings, including practices, competitions, transportation, and off-site events.
