ATHLETICS - JV HEAD BOYS BASKETBALL COACH

 

Job Goal:

To provide leadership, instruction, and supervision for the South Lake High School Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Program while promoting skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, academic achievement, and positive citizenship. The coach will prepare student-athletes for progression within the district basketball program and foster an environment that supports personal growth, self-discipline, confidence, and competitive success. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model and motivator.
  • Previous coaching and/or playing experience in basketball required; high school coaching experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to organize, supervise, and develop a comprehensive athletic program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball rules, regulations, strategies, and skill development.
  • Established skill in the fundamental and technical aspects of basketball.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Completion of MHSAA Coaches Advancement Program (CAP) requirements or willingness to obtain certification within required timelines.
  • Successful completion of all district-required background checks and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to comply with the South Lake Schools Coaches Handbook and the District's overall athletic philosophy.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or designee may determine appropriate and acceptable.
Performance Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Develop a sense of community that values and celebrates diversity among all participating student-athletes.
  • Understand and comply with all rules and guidelines established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA), league regulations, and South Lake Schools policies.
  • Uphold the Athlete Code of Conduct and conduct themselves in accordance with the MHSAA Athletic Code for Coaches.
  • Serve as a positive role model and maintain professional conduct at all times.
  • Promote self-control, good sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect among student-athletes.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes at all practices, contests, and team activities.
  • Ensure no student-athlete is left unsupervised or unattended during or after practices, contests, or team travel.
  • Verify with the Human Resources Department that all coaches, assistants, aides, guests, and volunteers (paid or unpaid) have proper clearance prior to participation.
  • Follow all directives issued by District administrators and the Athletic Director.
  • Establish positive working relationships with teachers, counselors, and staff to support student-athletes experiencing academic, social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
  • Teach and coach the techniques, fundamentals, and strategies necessary for individual and team success.
  • Organize and direct all aspects of the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Program.
  • Work collaboratively with the Varsity Head Coach to ensure alignment of program philosophy, expectations, offensive and defensive systems, and player development goals.
  • Attend required clinics, meetings, and professional development activities to remain current with MHSAA rules, league procedures, and coaching best practices.
  • Adhere to all established District, league, and MHSAA rules pertaining to the sport.
  • Organize, schedule, and supervise tryouts (as needed), practices, skill development opportunities, scouting activities, and summer camps.
  • Implement injury prevention measures and follow established procedures for parent notification, accident reporting, and medical concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with district and MHSAA concussion protocols, heat-related illness prevention guidelines, and student-athlete safety requirements.
  • Verify student-athlete eligibility in collaboration with the Athletic Director, including registration, residency, physical examinations, and roster requirements.
  • Monitor academic performance, attendance, and eligibility of student-athletes on a regular basis.
  • Promote academic achievement, positive citizenship, and leadership among student-athletes.
  • Provide the Principal and Athletic Director with a written copy of team rules prior to the start of the season and after any revisions.
  • Distribute and review team expectations and rules with student-athletes and parents.
  • Maintain effective communication with student-athletes, parents, administrators, and coaching staff regarding schedules, expectations, and program updates.
  • Promote respect for school property, athletic facilities, and equipment, including proper care and use.
  • Inventory, distribute, collect, and maintain District athletic equipment throughout the season.
  • Prepare and submit equipment for storage, maintenance, or reconditioning at the conclusion of the season.
  • Evaluate game officials and submit required reports when applicable.
  • Arrange all team transportation through the Athletic Department.
  • Accompany the team to all away contests by traveling on the team bus whenever district transportation is provided.
  • Directly supervise student-athletes at both home and away contests.
  • Properly secure school and District facilities following practices and contests.
  • Report game results to media outlets, school officials, and the Athletic Director in a timely manner.
  • Maintain positive public relations with media, booster organizations, parents, officials, volunteers, community members, students, and fans.
  • Support student-athlete participation and success across all South Lake athletic programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, disciplinary matters, and other sensitive information in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or administration.

Employment Conditions:

  • Employees shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment with the District.
  • Employees shall comply with all Board policies and applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), applicable non-discrimination requirements, and related educational regulations.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times as required by the athletic schedule.
  • Must be able to supervise students in a variety of athletic settings, including practices, competitions, transportation, and off-site activities.
  • Such alternatives to the above conditions as the Athletic Director or designee may find appropriate and acceptable.
