What This Job Entails

As an L2 Data Center Technician, you will act as a critical technical anchor on the data center floor, taking ownership of complex server diagnostics, hardware lifecycle management, and network deployment support. This role is designed for an experienced, self-motivated technician who excels at bridging the gap between physical infrastructure and logical configuration. You will collaborate closely with remote engineering teams to isolate root causes, execute high-risk hardware repairs, and ensure that all equipment is fully provisioned and deployment-ready.

Your Roles and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, isolate, and troubleshoot complex server hardware, power, and connectivity issues. Partner with remote engineering teams to identify root causes and implement permanent fixes.
  • Coordinate the end-to-end procurement and installation of faulty hardware components. Oversee the Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) process, ensuring dead-on-arrival (DOA) or failed parts are safely packaged, logged, and shipped back to vendors.
  • Perform critical system firmware and BIOS upgrades in strict compliance with approved baseline versions. Configure initial system management layers, including IP addresses, subnet masks, gateways, and default login credentials (via iDRAC, ILO, or serial console).
  • Provide advanced hands-on support to network administrators. This includes executing precise cable re-routing, replacing faulty transceiver optics on both servers and switch ports, and assisting with complex physical network upgrades.
  • Rack, stack, cable, and power-on devices to ensure they are 100% prepared for remote configuration by network or systems engineering teams. Validate physical connectivity and operational readiness post-installation.
  • Serve as the on-site "hands and eyes" for urgent, ad-hoc operational requests. Conduct comprehensive physical audits of the data center floor to ensure absolute inventory accuracy in the asset management database.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience in an enterprise data center, colocation facility, or high-scale IT infrastructure environment.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; technical certifications (CompTIA Server , Network , Cisco CCNA, or vendor-specific OEM hardware certifications) are highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise-level server architecture (multiprocessor systems, RAID controllers, PCIe bus, and DIMM mapping.
  • Hands-on experience with out-of-band management tools (IDRAC, iLO, IPMI) and serial console.
  • Deep familiarity with fiber optic standards, connector types (LC, MPO), transceiver modules (SFP, QSFP), and optical power testing.
  • Intermediate proficiency with ticketing platforms (ServiceNow, Jira) and asset tracking databases.
  • Proven ability to work independently under minimal supervision, strong analytical problem-solving skills, and a track record of communicating clearly with remote technical stakeholders.

Physical Demand & Work Environment

  • Must have the ability to safely lift, carry, and maneuver rack-mounted equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently, and assist with team lifts for heavier chassis.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach for extended periods inside server cabinets and hot/cold containment aisles.
  • Comfort working in a high-density, climate-controlled environment with continuous ambient fan noise and cool air currents.
