GENERAL STATEMENT

The Government Affairs & Initiatives Graduate Assistant assists the Director, Government Affairs & Initiatives and the Student Leadership Manager in the support of ASI Student Government leadership and program development. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for managing and advising Beach Team, a mentoring and volunteer program for first-year and transfer students interested in student government. The incumbent will work to create learning experiences for Beach Team members and student government officers, as well as foster their personal and professional growth. Additionally, the Graduate Assistant will support in the development and implementation of Student Government leadership training, orientation, and retreats.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Recruits, trains, motivates, advises and manages Beach Team members.
  1. Facilitates weekly Beach Team meetings.
  1. Creates andfacilitatestraining on leadership, advocacy, and personal/professional development for student government officers and Beach Team members.
  1. Assists the Government Affairs staff with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the Student Government Retreats andtrainingsfor student leaders.
  1. Assists the Student Leadership Manager in overall event planninglogistics, implementation, and assessment.
  1. Supports inthe recruitment of Student Government officers and provides on-board training to new leaders as vacancies are filled throughout the year.
  1. Develops and employs assessment tools to evaluate student government learning outcomes, development workshops, and leadership retreats.
  1. Mayadviseboards/sub-boards as delegated by the Director, ensuring that each board has consistent and, at times, multiple layers of advisement. 
  1. Assistswith the management of the operating budget forBeachTeam.
  1. Supports Student Government’s involvement in major programs including but not limiting: Week of Welcome,Smorgasport, Homecoming, ASI Night, ASI Elections, Day at the Beach, ASI Beach Bash,Takea Sec with the Execs, ASI Awards Banquet, and other student programming, as needed.
  1. Works cooperatively with ASI staff to plan and implement corporate student programs and/or training sessions, as needed.
  1. Participates with other Division of Student Affairs and ASI graduate assistants in training and development activities.
  1. Supports the Government office staff in initiativesregardingdiversity, equity,inclusionand access as it pertains to student leadership and involvement.
  1. Under direction from the Board Administrator, may serve as Recording Secretary for ASI governing boards and its sub-boards and committees.Supportsin the preparation of agendas, minutes, and supporting material for distribution. Ensurestimelydistribution of material tocomply withthe Gloria Romero Act of 2000.
  1. Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree required; leadership experience in student government or student organizations preferred. Enrolled in and making satisfactory progress in the preferred areas of Counseling, Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related graduate degree program at CSULB. Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.

Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of student development, student learning outcomes assessment, individual and group behavior, and parliamentary procedure. Strong counseling, leadership, customer service, interpersonal, written, verbal, and time management skills, with the ability to effectively engage and support a diverse student population. Ability to plan and coordinate events, trainings, and student involvement initiatives using initiative, resourcefulness, independent judgment, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintain professionalism, apply ASI and University policies appropriately, and build effective working relationships within a diverse academic community.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Schedule

This position is an annual, year-round position that works through the winter & summer academic breaks. Shifts are generally scheduled Monday–Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM, with occasional evening and weekend hours required for event support. Scheduled hours may fluctuate based on departmental needs and event activity.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit a at a desk or computer workstation and use hands and fingers to key data, sort documents, and file paperwork. The employee is frequently required to stand and be able to talk or hear in interactions with others. The employee is occasionally required to walk to other offices within the building and around the campus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
