ESKIMOS Light Duty Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY

The position is responsible for inspecting and maintaining light duty vehicles with a maintenance schedule and as issues arise. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned) 

  1. Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services, such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups with maintenance schedule.
  2. Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, drive trains.
  3. Diagnosing and trouble shooting ability with use of scanning tool/computer.
  4. Install and repair accessories, such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  5. Assemble/disassemble vehicle parts using hoists, hand tools, pneumatic and electric tools and instruments.
  6. Welding and fabrication as needed.
  7. Clean and maintain equipment, tools, and the general work area.
  8. Prepare and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Mechanic trade school courses and/or 3 years of mechanical work experience. 

  • Ability to use scanning instruments and computers. 

  • Valid Alaska Driver license required. 

  • The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is important and preferred but not required. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and occasionally taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes the ability to use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is in a small engine shop setting or outside. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, may frequently be exposed to extreme cold, and occasional exposed to extreme heat and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft. The employee will work near moving mechanical parts, and high, precarious places. The employee will handle explosive materials such as pressurized gas & propane tanks. In addition, there is risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
