    Reports To: Ashland High School Principal & Superintendent
    FLSA Status: Exempt
    Salary: $103,968 – $132,276 *2025-26 salary schedule* (2026-27 salary schedule to be determined)

    JOB SUMMARY
    The Director of Athletics, Activities, Safety & Security provides visionary leadership and operational oversight for all high school and middle school athletics and activities programs, while also coordinating and advancing districtwide safety and security systems. This role ensures high-quality student programs, equitable access, regulatory compliance, and safe learning environments across all campuses. The Director collaborates closely with building administrators, coaches, advisors, community partners, and public safety agencies to foster a culture of excellence, engagement, and preparedness.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    District Athletics & Activities Leadership
    • Provide leadership, oversight, and daily management of all high school and middle school athletics and activities programs.
    • Develop, manage, and monitor athletic and activities budgets, including YAAL programs, ensuring compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
    • Oversee the scheduling of all athletic and activity events, coordinating with other districts, OSAA, leagues, and officials.
    • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all coaches, advisors, and appropriate classified staff.
    • Ensure all coaching staff maintain current required certifications and complete mandatory district trainings.
    • Provide regular performance feedback and annual evaluations for athletic coaches and designated classified staff.
    • Conduct comprehensive orientation for all coaches on district/OSAA policies, expectations, and procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with OSAA bylaws, site rules, district policies, and Title IX requirements; investigate and resolve violations.
    • Verify that all student participants meet eligibility requirements (academic standing, medical clearance, insurance, parent consent, and Code of Conduct compliance).
    • Coordinate and budget transportation for all athletic and activity programs, ensuring safe and timely travel to away events.
    • Hire and schedule officials for home competitions; ensure appropriate supervision and staffing for all events.
    • Oversee the maintenance, readiness, and scheduling of practice and competition facilities.
    • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment and materials for each program; ensure end-of-season reporting to principals.
    • Manage purchasing and approval of uniforms, equipment, and related supplies.
    • Coordinate and support sports banquets, award ceremonies, and documentation of letters/recognitions.
    • Serve as liaison with athletic booster groups, coaches, and site administration.
    • Collaborate with leadership programs to develop and schedule school activities and events.
    • Address and resolve parent, student, and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner.
    • Participate in fundraising oversight, recommendations, communication efforts (press box, announcements), and promotional activities.
    • Assist in the evaluation and professional development of certified staff connected to athletics and activities.
    District Safety & Security Leadership
    • Oversee and coordinate the district's safety program, ensuring OSHA compliance, school safety protocols, and districtwide disaster preparedness.
    • Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of emergency response procedures in partnership with school and district leadership.
    • Coordinate safety drills, maintain compliance documentation, and ensure readiness across all sites.
    • Work collaboratively with local emergency services, law enforcement, and community partners.
    • Conduct routine safety audits of buildings and grounds; recommend and implement improvements.
    • Promote a culture of safety by ensuring staff are trained in emergency response, safety procedures, and district protocols.
    • Assume responsibility for student safety and welfare whenever hazards or risks are observed on or near campus.
    Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
    • Manage and troubleshoot daily operations of the athletics and activities programs.
    • Ensure punctuality, professionalism, and adherence to all district and board policies.
    • Utilize district electronic systems, platforms, and applications effectively.
    • Maintain accurate records, reporting, and compliance documentation.
    • Complete all annual mandatory trainings by the district-established deadlines.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Principal (depending on district structure).
    • Attend work regularly and punctually.
    • Annually complete all required trainings by the district established due date.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. This position supervises athletic coaches, activity advisors, and designated classified staff.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Education and/or Experience:
      Master's degree preferred with an emphasis in K-12 education. Prior K-12 athletics leadership experience preferred. Experience working with culturally diverse families and communities, or otherwise demonstrated commitment to equity and strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with diverse populations.
    • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current Oregon Driver's License. State of Oregon Administrative Licensure preferred.
    • Interpersonal/Communication Skills: Works well with diverse populations of students and adults. Strong communication skills including listening, problem solving, and de-escalation. Remains open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive work environment.
    • Finance and Budgeting: Strong verbal and written communication; values and ensures inclusion of all voices. Works well with diverse communities; focuses on resolving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening without interrupting; remains calm and open to others in tense or difficult situations. Strong presentation skills and ability to respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations.
    • Finance and Budgeting: Strong fiscal and program management skills.
    • Technology: General skills and knowledge of computer usage and ability to use and understand a variety of software systems for managing communications, finance, and curriculum.
    • Other Skills and Abilities: Effectively manage job tasks while working in an environment with frequent interruptions. Create a safe, orderly, positive school climate for students and staff.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others including understanding and being understood. While much of the work will be completed in an office environment, the employee will need to move between buildings, visiting sites throughout the high school campus and the district. This position requires use of a variety of digital systems, software, and hardware for communication, budgeting, and compliance. This position will require some travel outside the district.
