Mechanical Layout Operator (Trimble / HVAC & Plumbing)

Position Summary 

Southern Mechanical is seeking a specialized Mechanical Layout Operator to join our team in Nashville. In this role, you will use Trimble Robotic Total Stations to translate mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing BIM models into precise physical field markings. You will ensure the exact placement of hanger inserts, sleeves, equipment pads, and piping runs to streamline installation and prevent field coordination conflicts.

• Location: Nashville, TN (On-site / local job sites)
• Pay Range: $35.00 – $40.00 per hour (Starting wage based on experience)
• Job Type: Full-time, Hourly
• Sign-On Bonus: $2,500 Sign-On Bonus (Paid out after 90 days of successful employment)

• Mechanical Layout: Lay out hangers, deck inserts, wall/floor sleeves, equipment pads, and underground utilities for HVAC and plumbing systems
• Equipment Mastery: Setup, calibrate, and operate Trimble Robotic Total Stations and handheld data collectors daily
• Data Management: Download, manage, and upload layout point files using Trimble Field Link or similar software
• Quality Control: Perform as-built surveys to verify concrete slab elevations and structural alignment before mechanical installation
• Collaboration: Partner with site superintendents, project managers, and the mechanical BIM/VDC modeling team to resolve layout discrepancies

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of field layout experience, specifically focused on commercial HVAC or plumbing systems
• Tech Savvy: Proven proficiency with Trimble field hardware and digital layout software
• Drawing Literacy: Advanced ability to read mechanical drawings, isometric piping schematics, duct layouts, and structural prints
• Trade Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical installation workflows, hanger spacing requirements, and gravity-fed plumbing slopes
• Driving Record: Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (required to operate the company vehicle)

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs of equipment regularly
• Ability to stand, walk on uneven terrain, and climb ladders/scaffolding for 8-10 hours a day
• Capability to work outdoors or in unconditioned buildings in all weather conditions
