About the Role:
Title: Technical Writer
Location: Sacramento, CA (Hybrid)
Documentation Development & Management
- Develop and maintain IT documentation (system/application docs; user guides/training materials; SOPs; technical specifications/configuration guides; standard project documentation; release notes/change documentation; knowledge base/help desk articles).
- Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and aligned with approved requirements and system designs.
- Establish versioning, archival, and retention standards to ensure documentation remains accurate and discoverable.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with developers/engineers, system administrators, business analysts, project managers, communication manager, security and compliance teams, and college interns.
- Conduct interviews and working sessions with subject matter experts (SMEs).
- Participate in project meetings to capture requirements, decisions, and changes.
- Drive adoption of documentation standards across IT and related departments.
- Provide training and guidance to contributors on style and best practices.
Standards, Quality & Governance
- Apply organizational documentation standards, templates, and style guides.
- Ensure consistency, clarity, usability, and accessibility of all materials.
- Support documentation reviews, approvals, and audits.
- Align documentation with IT governance, security, and compliance requirements.
Project & Change Support
- Support IT projects across the system development lifecycle (SDLC).
- Update documentation following approved changes and releases.
- Assist with project close-out documentation and knowledge transfer.
- Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement efforts.
Knowledge Management
- Organize and publish documentation within document management systems (e.g., SharePoint).
- Support onboarding and training through reusable documentation.
- Reduce reliance on SMEs by capturing institutional knowledge.
- Serve as the central point of coordination for documentation initiatives across the enterprise.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, Information Systems, English, Communications, or related field, or equivalent certification and experience.
- 5 years of experience as a Technical Writer in an IT or technology environment.
Skills & Competencies
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to understand and document complex technical concepts.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Experience with documentation tools and platforms (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence, document repositories).
Familiarity with:
- IT systems and software applications
- SDLC methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid)
- Version control and document governance practices
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Salary Range: The salary for this position is between $80,000 - $85,000 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
