JOB TITLE: Assistant Production Manager FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Materials Recycling Facility DATE: July 2026
REPORTS TO: Production Manager
Position Summary
The Assistant Production Manager supports the daily operations of the Manitowoc County Recycling Center and Compost Sites. This hands-on leadership role assists with facility operations, equipment maintenance, material processing, staff supervision, customer service, safety compliance, and production activities. The Assistant Production Manager helps ensure safe, efficient operations while supporting production goals and maintaining a positive work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations & Production
- Assist with the daily operation of the Recycling Center and Compost Sites.
- Operate, inspect, and perform routine preventive maintenance on balers, conveyors, forklifts, scales, and other facility equipment.
- Monitor equipment performance and report maintenance, safety, or operational concerns.
- Accurately weigh incoming and outgoing materials using facility scale systems.
- Load, unload, stack, move, sort, process, and prepare recyclable materials and electronics for shipment.
- Support production goals, quality standards, workflow efficiency, and recordkeeping requirements.
Staff Leadership & Support
- Assist with training, coaching, and supporting employees and program participants.
- Provide daily leadership, work direction, and oversight to ensure productivity, quality, and compliance with established procedures.
- Communicate operational priorities, workflow assignments, and expectations while fostering a positive, respectful, and productive work environment.
- Refer employee performance issues and personnel concerns to the Production Manager.
- Serve as a leadership resource and assist with supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Production Manager.
Customer Service & Administrative Support
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers, vendors, contractors, and drivers.
- Support administrative functions through data entry, reporting, recordkeeping, and email communication.
- Utilize computer systems and Microsoft Office applications to support daily operations.
Safety & Facility Maintenance
- Follow and help enforce all facility safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when applicable.
- Identify and report safety hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment concerns.
- Maintain facility grounds, work areas, and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
Additional Responsibilities
- Work occasional weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency shifts as operational needs require.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Manager, Operations Manager, or designated leadership.
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
- Experience in manufacturing, recycling, warehouse, production, industrial, or related environments preferred.
- Experience operating forklifts or other material-handling equipment preferred.
· Basic preventive maintenance and equipment troubleshooting experience preferred.
- Previous supervisory, team lead, or management experience preferred; training will be provided for qualified candidates.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate forklifts, balers, conveyors, and other facility equipment.
- Ability to perform basic equipment troubleshooting and maintenance as trained.
- Ability to learn and identify recyclable material grades and electronic components.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and data-entry systems.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing workloads and operational demands.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to meet Ascend Services, Inc. insurance carrier eligibility requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Regular standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Frequent lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional lifting of heavier materials with assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Ability to safely operate industrial equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding production environment.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and snow.
- Regular exposure to dust, noise, moving machinery, and recyclable materials.
- Overtime, weekend, holidays, and emergency coverage may be required based on operational needs.
