SUMMARY
The Physician Assistant is an integral members of the healthcare team, providing high-quality medical care under the supervision of physicians. This role requires not only medical expertise and clinical skills but also compassion, critical thinking, and a commitment to patient-centered care. The Physician Assistant will possess exceptional clinical expertise in assisting with surgical procedures, alongside strong organizational skills to effectively coordinate surgeries. This role demands a balance of clinical proficiency, administrative acumen, and interpersonal finesse to ensure seamless patient experiences and optimal surgical outcomes. The Physician Assistant will work closely with the surgical team to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality aesthetic care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals in the surgical team to provide high-quality patient care during surgical procedures.
- Preparation of the Operating Room: Ensure the OR is sterile, fully equipped, and organized with the necessary instruments and supplies to promote patient safety and reduce the risk of infections.
- Surgical Instrumentation: Anticipate surgeons’ needs by selecting and passing instruments efficiently, maintaining a sterile field, and minimizing the likelihood of complications.
- Patient Preparation: Assist in positioning and preparing patients on the operating table to ensure safety and comfort, helping to prevent adverse events.
- Surgical Assistance: Support surgeons during procedures by facilitating seamless workflows and contributing to improved outcomes, such as reduced complications and revisit rates. Monitor patient vital signs, assess surgical sites, and intervene as necessary to ensure patient safety and well-being. Administer medications and intravenous fluids.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and troubleshoot surgical equipment as needed to ensure safe and effective procedures.
- Pre and Post: Conducting physical exams, ordering tests and imaging, prescribing medications and patient education.
- Sterile Technique: Maintain strict adherence to sterile protocols and best practices to lower infection rates and uphold patient safety.
- Post-Procedure Duties: Clean and sterilize instruments, restock supplies, and prepare the OR for the next procedure to sustain high standards of readiness and minimize infection risks.
- Participate in post-operative care, including wound management, patient education, and documentation.
- Adhere to facility policies and protocols.
- Understand HIPAA and the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Counsels and educates patients and their families/caregivers concerning pre and post-operative care.
- Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic studies.
- Provides telephone and/or email consultations with patients to answer questions regarding pre-operative concerns, post-operative care and general clinical questions.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Physician Assistant degree from an accredited program.
- Currently licensed in the state of Alabama with no restrictions.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a surgical setting preferred. Preferably in plastic or reconstructive surgery.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Alabama.
- State of Alabama Controlled Substance License and DEA
SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of surgical techniques.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and patient-centered approach.
- Proficiency in medical terminology, electronic health records (EHR), and Microsoft Office applications.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding ethical standards in patient care.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and to talk and hear. Employees may be occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds along with pushing and pulling on higher BMI patients. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, employees may be exposed to risk of infectious diseases when interacting with patients and/or family members. The employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
