Position Summary
We are seeking a part time motivated and skilled PACU Nurse to join our team. The PACU Nurse specializes in caring for patients recovering from anesthesia, ensuring a smooth and safe transition from surgery to recovery. They closely monitor vital signs, manage pain, address post-operative complications, and collaborate with surgical and anesthesia teams to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. PACU Nurses prioritize patient safety, educate patients and their families on recovery protocols, and prepare patients for discharge. Their role requires meticulous documentation, strict adherence to hospital protocols, and a commitment to delivering exceptional post-operative care.
Key Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
Clinical Care in a Specialized Setting- Post-Anesthesia Monitoring: Observe patients closely during recovery from anesthesia, ensuring stable vital signs and a smooth emergence from sedation, particularly for surgeries requiring general anesthesia or sedation.
- Pain Management: Administer prescribed pain medications and assess their effectiveness, ensuring patient comfort after procedures.
- Observation for Complications: Monitor for signs of surgical complications such as excessive bleeding, hematoma, or adverse reactions to anesthesia.
- Airway Management: Provide vigilant airway support and interventions for patients recovering from sedative agents, given the increased use of conscious sedation in plastic surgery.
Patient Safety and Recovery
- Wound and Dressing Care: Inspect and manage surgical sites, dressings, and drains, ensuring proper healing and identifying any signs of infection or complications.
- Patient Positioning: Support patients in maintaining appropriate positioning to protect surgical results, such as elevation of the head or other specific instructions for recovery.
- Infection Control: Maintain strict adherence to infection prevention protocols, particularly for procedures with aesthetic or reconstructive outcomes.
Patient Education and Discharge
- Recovery Instructions: Provide detailed post-operative care instructions specific to plastic surgery, including care for incisions, drains, and any prosthetic or implant-related considerations.
- Aesthetic Outcome Education: Educate patients on realistic expectations for swelling, bruising, and timelines for visible results.
- Follow-Up Coordination: Ensure patients understand follow-up schedules and the importance of adhering to post-operative care plans.
Collaboration and Communication
- Surgeon Liaison: Collaborate closely with plastic surgeons to report on patient progress, recovery challenges, or concerns.
- Patient Advocacy: Act as a patient advocate, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed with compassion and professionalism.
- Team Coordination: Work with medical assistants, surgical technicians, and administrative staff to ensure a seamless care process.
Documentation and Compliance
- Accurate Records: Maintain thorough documentation of post-anesthesia care, patient responses, administered medications, and recovery milestones.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to specific guidelines for outpatient surgical centers, including state and federal regulations (e.g., AAAASF, Medicare).
Facility Operations Support
- Equipment Management: Ensure recovery area equipment, such as monitors, suction devices, and oxygen supplies, is functioning properly and readily available.
- Stock Management: Monitor and restock medications and supplies tailored to plastic surgery recovery, such as compression garments and ice packs.
Specialized Patient Care
- Emotional Support: Provide compassionate care to patients who may feel anxious about their appearance or recovery.
- Confidentiality Assurance: Maintain strict patient confidentiality, particularly for high-profile clients or individuals seeking discretion
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a PACU Nurse (RN), with at least 1-2 years of experience in a surgical nurse role, preferably in a plastic surgery, dermatology, or cosmetic surgery setting.
- Experience with plastic surgery procedures, such as facelifts, breast augmentations, liposuction, and rhinoplasty is highly preferred.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required, depending on the clinical setting.
- Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) certification may be required.
- Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure environments.
- Ability to educate and communicate complex information to patients and their families.
