POSITION SUMMARY (Basic Purpose Or Primary Function Of Job)

The Planned Giving Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding planned gifts to support the Arthritis Foundation’s fundraising goals. Reporting to the Vice President of Direct Response & Planned Giving, the Director will manage a portfolio of qualified prospects by developing personalized solicitation strategies, aligning donor interests with gift opportunities, and providing ongoing stewardship to planned giving donors. This role requires a deep understanding of the Foundation’s programs and priorities, along with the ability to effectively communicate them—both in writing and in person—to inspire and secure meaningful philanthropic support.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal Responsibilities Or Job Duties)

  • Achieve annual revenue goals by managing fundraising program activities including but not limited to relationship strategy development, prospect identification, solicitation and engagement, proposal development, recognition, and appreciation efforts for current and new major gift income sources in an assigned region.
  • Oversee the development and management of an individual portfolio of qualified planned gift prospects and donors through quality, strategic contacts, and face-to-face or virtual visits to identify, cultivate, solicit, and successfully close high-value gifts.
  • Practice best-in-class stewardship of donors in portfolio to increase gift size, secure multi-year gifts, and maximize retention.
  • Encourage all individual giving donors and prospects to engage and connect with activities within arthritis communities nationwide.
  • Follow-up with all leads in a timely fashion and prioritize portfolio.
  • Develop and propose strategies to establish, cultivate, and steward strong professional relationships with stakeholders to build lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning their passions with the mission, priorities, and goals of the Arthritis Foundation.
  • Reviews donor estate plans to identify giving opportunities, suggests planning strategies without offering legal or tax advice, and collaborates with donors' advisors as needed.
  • Update and maintain prospect and donor records in the organization’s database by recording activities, contacts, and strategies on an ongoing basis, consistent with departmental requirements.
  • Travel on a regular basis to the assigned region, stewarding and cultivating planned giving donor relationships and soliciting gifts.
  • Other duties as assigned by VP, Direct Response & Planned Giving.

Required Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree required;
  • Three or more years of planned gift fundraising, including bequest administration, charitable gift annuities, trusts and other planned gifts, preferably in a voluntary health setting.
  • Innovative, self-motivated, able to manage multiple projects well, working both independently and as a team member.
  • Collaborative problem solver who brings an entrepreneurial approach to designing personal donor engagement strategies.
  • Successful proven record of completing planned giving agreements through personal interviews
  • Ability to articulate a case for support so that individuals “buy into” the vision/mission/goals of the organization, demonstrated by a track record in closing planned gifts.
  • Strong awareness of health and health care issues, especially as they relate to older citizens
  • Strong computer skills for proposals and CRM (Salesforce) system.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and foster strong, relationship-based connections with donors, professionals, and Foundation stakeholders.
  • A can-do attitude and willingness to go the extra mile in service of our mission.
  • Sophisticated and polished interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of donor and Foundation information is required.
  • Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets, and estates.
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and alter strategic advancement plans.
