Job Description: School Nurse
A School Nurse plays a critical role in the overall health and well-being of students, providing care for acute injuries, chronic conditions, and general health management.:
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree conferred from a regionally accredited college or university or from an institution accredited by the National League of Nursing or a diploma program in nursing accredited b y the National Leage of Nursing or compact license. Current RN license issued by the New Mexico Nursing Board. Current School Nurse license issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Health Assessments & Screenings:
- Conduct health screenings such as vision, hearing, and scoliosis tests.
- Assess student health complaints and provide appropriate care (first aid, medication administration, etc.).
- Maintain accurate health records for all students.
- Care for Illnesses and Injuries:
- Provide first aid, emergency care, and treatment for injuries or illnesses that occur at school.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments as needed.
- Contact parents, guardians, or emergency personnel if necessary for urgent care.
- Chronic Condition Management:
- Develop and implement care plans for students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies).
- Monitor students’ health and ensure adherence to treatment plans.
- Train staff on health conditions and emergency protocols (e.g., using an EpiPen).
- Health Education:
- Educate students and staff on health-related topics such as hygiene, nutrition, mental health, and disease prevention.
- Participate in health promotion activities and collaborate with health educators.
- Disease Prevention & Control:
- Monitor and report communicable diseases to local health authorities as required.
- Advise school personnel on infection control policies, especially during outbreaks.
- Counseling & Advocacy:
- Provide emotional support and counseling to students experiencing health-related stress.
- Advocate for student health and safety within the school setting.
- Work closely with families, teachers, and community health providers to meet students' health needs.
- Administrative Duties:
- Maintain student health records, medication logs, and treatment plans.
- Ensure compliance with school health policies and state regulations.
- Participate in the development of school health policies and emergency action plans.
- All other duties as assigned by supervisors

Physical Requirements:
Mobility:
- Must be able to move freely throughout the school, including navigating stairs or long hallways.
- Occasionally required to assist in lifting or transferring students (in case of injury or physical disability).
Strength:
- Ability to lift and carry supplies or equipment, such as first aid kits, weighing up to 20-30 pounds.
- Occasionally may be required to assist in positioning or supporting students with limited mobility.
Dexterity:
- Fine motor skills are needed to perform tasks like administering medication, taking vital signs, and performing first aid.
Stamina:
- Long periods of standing or walking may be required during health assessments or emergencies.
- May need to maintain focus and alertness during crisis situations.
Visual & Auditory Requirements:
- Must have clear vision to read health records, medication labels, and monitor students.
- Ability to hear conversations, alarms, or sounds indicating an emergency or distress.
Cognitive & Emotional Requirements:
- Must be able to stay calm in emergencies and make quick, effective decisions.
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly with students, parents, and staff.
- Must be able to handle stress, particularly when dealing with injuries, illnesses, or emotional situations.
Work Environment:
- Primarily in a school setting with frequent interruptions.
- May encounter high levels of noise, movement, and varied activities during the school day.
