JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The HLT Sanding & Painting Technician is responsible for preparing, refinishing, and restoring fiberglass hot line tools through sanding, surface preparation, and painting processes. This role ensures that all tools are properly cleaned, prepared, and coated to meet quality, safety, and appearance standards prior to final testing and return to service.
This position supports the repair and reconditioning workflow by executing consistent preparation and finishing processes while maintaining efficiency, quality control, and adherence to safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Preferred:
Experience in sanding, painting, or industrial finishing.

Experience using sanding or finishing equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Work performed in lab and warehouse environments.
Requires standing, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and handling PPE items.
Must follow all safety protocols and use required PPE.
Extended hours may be required to meet testing deadlines.

2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Tool Preparation & Disassembly
Receive tools designated for sanding and painting.
Assist in disassembly of tools when required for proper surface preparation.
Inspect tools prior to sanding to identify damage or repair needs.
Coordinate with HLT Technicians on repair vs reconditioning requirements.
Sanding & Surface Preparation
Perform sanding of tools to remove old coatings, defects, and surface imperfections.
Ensure proper preparation of surfaces, including two part epoxy mixing and patching for coating adhesion.
Use appropriate sanding equipment (including vacuum sanding systems).
Follow consistent sanding techniques across all applicable tool types.
Avoid sanding restricted components.
Cleaning, Masking & Pre-Paint Preparation
Clean all tools thoroughly after sanding.
Wipe down surfaces to remove dust, debris, and contaminants.
Apply tape and masking materials to protect non-painted components.
Prepare tools to meet painting requirements and standards.
Painting & Finishing
Apply coatings to tools using approved painting methods.
Ensure even, consistent application of paint or coating.
Maintain quality and appearance standards across all finished tools.
Support batch processing of tools to maximize efficiency (e.g., multiple sticks per cycle).
Coordinate with team members on shared painting responsibilities.
Quality Control & Inspection
Inspect finished tools for coating quality and completeness.
Identify defects such as uneven coating, missed areas, or contamination.
Rework tools as needed to meet quality standards.
Ensure tools are ready for final inspection and testing.
Workflow & Throughput Management
Execute assigned workload based on daily production targets.
Maintain consistent throughput (e.g., sanding and painting volume per day).
Coordinate with HLT team to ensure smooth workflow between repair, prep, and testing.
Identify bottlenecks and communicate workflow issues.
Manage Equipment & Material Handling
Operate sanding and painting equipment safely.
Maintain tools and equipment used in the painting process.
Monitor and replace protective film on window and light in the sanding area.
Clean and/or replace Vacuum Filters.
Replace and maintain sanding medium.
Monitor and manage use of materials such as sandpaper, tape, and coatings.
Ensure proper storage and handling of materials.
Safety & Compliance
Use required PPE including full face mask / respirator, Goggles, Gloves, and Protective clothing.
Follow all safety procedures related to sanding dust, coatings, and ventilation.
Ensure proper use of ventilation systems and dust collection equipment.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Work Area Organization
Maintain clean and organized sanding and painting areas.
Ensure proper staging of tools before and after processing.
Support overall organization of HLT workflow areas.
Cross-Department Coordination
Work closely with HLT Technicians, HLT Manager, Production / Assembly (if applicable)
Ensure alignment between preparation, repair, and final testing stages.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Quality and consistency of finished tools.
Throughput and daily production output.
Rework rate due to finishing defects.
Adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements.
