Job Summary:

Under designated supervision, installs, modifies, repairs, trouble shoots, loads, and tests new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment supplying up to 550 volts. Installs and repairs large systems that provide a variety of air conditioning functions where specific and critical climatic conditions are unnecessary.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, electrical maintenance, and repair manuals to plan and layout the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and proper and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls. Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests secondary electrical distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements.
  • Determines, arranges, places, and routes conduit, distribution panels, boxes, circuits, fittings, connections, and circuit breakers. Maintains and repairs various electrical systems, including a variety of appliances, lights, electrical drives, alarm and security, circuits, clocks, etc. Locates and diagnoses trouble in fire alarms, lighting, buzzers, clocks, thermostats, etc., which may involve the use of a variety of electrical test equipment.
  • Installs and repairs a variety of large air conditioning systems, such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption, steam jet, and air cycle, serving large retail, food, services, vending, and office areas. Works on a variety of refrigerant controls such as those with low- and high-pressure side floats, automatic thermostatic expansion valves, capillary or choke types, and those based on volume or quantity changes.
  • Also works on a variety of complicated motor controls, thermostatic (remote and double remote), defrosting controls, relays, and other controls to protect against overload and overheating.
  • Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receiver, and evaporator. Install and fits related connecting rods, crankshafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushings. Overhauls valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings. Aligns motor and flywheel drives.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical and air conditioning/refrigeration systems and equipment. Working from drawings and schematic diagrams, prepares labor and material cost estimates and develops bill of materials required for installation and maintenance of electrical and/or air conditioning refrigeration systems.
  • Performs carpentry, painting, and/or plumbing functions requiring a level of skill and responsibility characteristic of work at grade M-9 and below. May install, maintain, and repair electronic and electro-mechanical cash registers and peripheral equipment. Performs preventive maintenance, routine repairs, and simple emergency repairs, as required.
  • As required, performs TDY travel of one or more days duration to other Exchange locations. May operate motor vehicle to transport material and associates, when required. May provide work direction for lower graded associates during absence of the supervisor. Ensures compliance with fire, safety, sanitation, and security regulations. Initiates work orders for repair and maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.

Complies with applicable directives, policies and procedures. Actively supports and implements applicable EEO laws and programs within the Exchange. Assumes other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

Education: High school or equivalent.

General experience: One year of general experience.

Specialized experience: Four years of specialized experience in refrigeration/air conditioning and/or electrical work. Must be qualified in the use of power and hand tools of the trade and/or electrical work. Must be qualified in the use of power and hand tools of the trade and possess a working knowledge of welding, soldering, and brazing. Must possess a valid automobile operator's license as required by local/state laws or military regulations.

Other: As determined by the supervisor. Any person involved with servicing stationary refrigerant systems must be certified by an EPA approved testing program and maintain certification as a Type I and II Technician as required by EPA'S Final Rule 608 (40 CFR, Part 82, Subpart I).

Additionally, those individuals who work with low pressure systems (chillers) will also maintain the Type III certification. Certification as a "Universal Technician" (certified as Type I, II and III) is preferred but not mandatory unless work involves low pressure systems. Application at overseas locations will be in accordance with requirements of host country/installation engineers.

If a sufficient number of qualified candidates do not apply, the minimum qualifications may be lowered without reposting.

Pay: From $24.56 per hour
