POSITION: Senior Network Engineer
JOB GOALS: The Senior Network Engineer’s primary responsibility is to ensure the availability, health, and performance of Arlington’s IP networking environment, consisting of wired and wireless ethernet networks supporting both Arlington Public Schools and the Town of Arlington. In this role, they are responsible for installing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting all installed network equipment, including but not limited to core and edge ethernet switches, wireless access points and associated controllers, firewalls, virtual private network (VPN) infrastructure, and external public internet connectivity. The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing redundant, highly available network architecture to maximize uptime and minimize end-user disruption, including disaster recovery (DR) planning. In this role, they will collaborate with both internal and external technical resources to ensure high quality service delivery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to the duties mentioned above, the individual in this position:
- Installs, configures, administers, and monitors all network equipment, software, and Internet connections
- Works with IT management to define network policies and procedures
- Collaborates with other systems engineers to integrate the town and districts authentication services (Active Directory, Microsoft Entra) with network services
- Assesses network security and performance on an ongoing basis and makes adaptations and recommendations as needed
- Maintains confidentiality of data stored, processed, or accessed by the network
- Collaborates with IT Security to ensure the security of the town and district’s
- Develops and implements a plan to mitigate the impact of network equipment
- Provides IT management timely updates on operational issues impacting the availability of critical network systems and ensures that network issues are resolved in a timely fashion
- Manages network technology vendors as needed
- Assists IT management in preparing the network portion of the technology roadmap and department’s capital and operations budgets.
- Provides network support training to Service Desk staff as
- Communicates relevant network activities to staff and teams affected by changes or problems with the voice and data networks.
- Maintains an inventory of networking equipment, thoroughly documents the network topology, and implements departmental change management practices for network
- Performs network maintenance during designated maintenance
- Tracks network performance using current monitoring tools and recommended improvements for monitoring and overall operational visibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent
- 5 years’ experience in network administration, including managing a heterogenous layer 2 / layer 3 network with multiple ISP uplinks for external internet connectivity.
- Experience in Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise switching and wireless network controllers, or equivalent platforms (Cisco, Aruba, etc.)
- Experience in Watchguard Firebox firewalls / network security appliances or equivalent
- Experience supporting IP-based telephony applications (VoIP), using Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise technology or an equivalent platform.
- Advanced understanding of IPv4 networking fundamentals and security, including experience with managed wireless networks, wireless network security, firewalls, RADIUS, DNS and DHCP. Experience managing routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) a plus.
- Understanding of and experience in the deployment of IPv6 a
- Experience in an Active Directory/LDAP environment, experience with cloud-based identity platforms (Entra ID, Google) using SAML / OpenID Connect a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex problems involving heterogeneous
- Experience managing an enterprise virtual server environment (VMware, Nutanix, ) a plus.
- Experience responding to network security issues, including incident response following
- Experience with PCI environments and compliance a
- Strong technical presentation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle to transport equipment
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month Position REPORTS TO: Manager, Cybersecurity
SALARY RANGE: $85,000 to $110,000 annually
