Job Summary:
  • Draw blood consistently, competently, and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
  • Record phlebotomy requisitions in logbook
  • Uses two patient identifiers. Identify with the patient comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed(confirmation of name and birthdate).
  • Display courteous, professionalism towards patients, co-workers, nursing, and medical staff.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reporting of medical/healthcare errors and seeks to protect patient if such errors occur.
  • Label and record all test tube at patient bedside, logs procedures, and files paperwork.
  • Have knowledge about which color/type top tube to use and the volume of blood needed. Needs to know test requirements. Follow Standard Precautions at all times.
  • Dispose of used needles and other sharps in a rigid sharp’s container. Does not recap used needles.
  • Clean and supply venipuncture trays.
  • Maintain work area, clean, stock the draw room, and Phlebotomy area, at all times for duration of scheduled shift.
  • Order supplies when needed.
  • Perform job duties with minimal supervision.
  • Complete duties in a time-efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT, URGENT, and ROUTINE orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders, and outpatients.
  • Seek guidance and direction as necessary.
  • Demonstrate the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Assist laboratory technologists.
  • Perform clerical work and answer phones when needed.
  • Follow policies and procedures for the laboratory and the facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skill/Education Requirements:
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience
  • Phlebotomy certification, Medical Assistant, LPN or certification preferred.
