The Information Technology Support Specialist supports and maintains technology equipment. This includes installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading technology hardware and software for optimal performance. Resolves end-user hardware and software problems in a timely manner so that end-users can accomplish business tasks. This position reports directly to the Section Manager.

Examples of Work

The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas Department of Transportation is an "at will" employer.

  • Field service requests from end-users via telephone, service portal and e-mail in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Apply diagnostic utilities and access software updates, drivers, knowledge bases, and frequently asked questions resources on the intranet to aid in problem resolution.
  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot software and hardware.
  • Research and recommend products in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Work with third-party support and equipment vendors to resolve problems.
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform equipment improvements, upgrades and repairs.
  • Contribute to team/committee meetings with vendors, staff, and end-users to help ensure the success of computer related projects.
  • Assist in developing business continuity and disaster recovery plans, maintain current knowledge of plans and respond to crises in accordance with the plans.

Minimum Requirements

Education and experience: The educational equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, computer information systems, or related field, OR the educational equivalent to a diploma from an accredited high school plus a minimum of four years in a technical support capacity.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Must possess understanding of technology concepts and jargon. Must be customer-centric, public service oriented and enjoy working with others. Must be able to multi-task and have strong time management and organization skills. Must be an advanced user of office productivity software such as Microsoft Office. Must possess strong communication (oral and written) skills. Must be able to maintain a positive attitude. Must have high integrity and be of strong moral character.

Physical requirements: Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry object up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to operate motor vehicles for Department business.

Working conditions: This position involves periods of sitting in front a computer and working alongside end-users and other Department personnel. This position must be flexible to work overtime and weekends, as needed.

Licenses, registrations and certifications: Valid driver’s license. Industry technology certifications preferred.

("Accredited" means the educational institution or program is accredited by an accrediting organization recognized either by the United States Department of Education or by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.)

A criminal background check will be required to determine suitability of employment, and failure to meet these standards may cause the applicant to be rejected or terminated from that position.

This position does not require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge or a bachelor’s degree or higher in the field; thus, this position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship.
