Job Description

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University—one of the nation’s premier mass communication schools—is seeking a Department HR Specialist Sr. to oversee its human resource operations. Under general supervision, this position will manage human resource functions in a complex academic unit or department with significant research and instructional emphasis. These functions include but are not limited to maintaining and retention of unit personnel files; payroll management; academic and non-academic staffing coordination; human resource compliance; internal controls; and other functions designated by unit administrator. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, proactive and well organized with human resource experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two (2) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience using Workday and Peoplesoft HCM platforms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PC based software for spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation applications.
  • Experience in working independently in a high transactional environment.
  • Experience in handling employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining employee related HR programs.


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.;
  • Supervises designated employees that include hiring, training, evaluations, disciplinary actions and scheduling.
  • This position reports to the department administrator.
