Job Description:

Position Salary Range: $46,000 - $48,000 per year; DOE

The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) is seeking well qualified candidate for an Academic Success Advisor for undergraduate advising at the Tempe campus. The Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting student retention and graduation university-wide and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies. This position will report to the Assistant Director Academic Services in SILC.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides individual and group academic advising and/or interacts with students in support of academic success.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to support academic success.
  • Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as DARS, Peoplesoft, and Salesforce), and the application of retention focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories.
  • Provides career advising, that is specific to language and culture students.
  • Provides curricular management for SILC courses to include database implementation in Kuali and attendance at meetings pertaining to new and modified courses.
  • Maintains an openness to new and developing tools utilized across the University to aid in student success and excellent service.
  • Utilizes collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, writing, phone and by Zoom; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships.
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues; collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.
  • Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success; attends and/or presents at orientation or recruiting events/activities/workshops.
  • Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.
  • Regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build effective practices.
  • Possesses a clear understanding of the larger picture of the college and/or departmental processes and expectations around the utilization of these tools and how they impact student experience.
  • Escalates/redirects urgent or conflicting requests.
  • Recognizes complex issues and alerts leadership; may provide suggestions in response.
  • Assists with the coordination of academic success program or advising policy development and implementation.
  • As required, act as a resource for faculty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of a Master's Degree in the Humanities or related field.
  • Experience working in academic advising or higher education, working with undergraduate students enrolled in in-person and/or online degree programs.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience in using technology to facilitate advising (DARS, People Soft, Salesforce etc.).
  • Experience teaching, training, or providing workshops/presentations to student populations.
  • Experience in living or studying abroad.
  • Evidence of having studied or having achieved intermediate or above proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Evidence of an educational background in the Humanities or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and methods of evidence-based academic advising strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASU academic structure and organization.
  • Experience in applying the principles, techniques and methods of teamwork, compromise, and collaboration to produce desired outcomes.
  • Experience in rapidly adapting to and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies, and methods.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationship with peers, faculty, students, administration and other interested parties.
  • Experience in interpreting student needs and determining when referral to other University resources is appropriate.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • This job requires excellent written and verbal communication skills to perform the essential duties

Department Statement:

The School of International Letters and Cultures is one of 19 academic units within The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where students receive rich educational experiences that prepare them for life and citizenship in the modern world. In addition to courses taught by world-class faculty in both ancient and modern languages and cultures, students are exposed to various world languages and cultures through study abroad programs, full-year or semester-long language and cultural immersion programs, on-campus international guest speakers, international student organizations, intensive language study, and mentorship by internationally recognized faculty. With a teaching and research staff of approximately 200 faculty, lecturers, instructors, faculty associates, and graduate teaching assistants, SILC offers 28 undergraduate degrees, 12 graduate degrees, 15 summer study abroad programs and has approximately 600 majors and 70 graduate students.
