Job Summary:
This Intern position is for college students interested in pursuing a professional career with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). This program gives civil engineering, construction management and similar majors the opportunity to gain practical experience as an intern in a variety of technical areas including highway and bridge construction projects, material testing, construction survey, and bridge, roadway, or traffic design. The type of work interns perform depends on the needs of the Department and may vary according to the Groups or Districts to which they are assigned.
Job Duties:
- Learns how to inspect items of work on highway construction projects; learns how to inspect contractor’s traffic control; learns techniques to ensure work is in compliance with applicable standards, specifications, and ensures public safety.
- Learns how to use specialized internal software and Google applications on a laptop computer to prepare correspondence, document observations, measurements, temperatures, quantities and work hours (i.e. daily diaries, labor compliance interviews and field test results in the Pen system; quant lists; Employee Timecard Entry).
- Learns how to read and interpret project plans, contract documents, specifications and standard drawings that are used on assigned construction projects.
Selective Preference(s):
Current college student, at the sophomore level or higher, pursuing a major in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a transportation and/or engineering-related discipline.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
