About the Role:
We are seeking a creative and motivated Senior Planner to support our growing planning practice. This is an opportunity to lead and contribute to innovative planning solutions for public sector projects, with a focus on transportation, community, and environmental planning. Candidates will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team including planners, engineers, and designers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and contribute to planning projects including feasibility studies, comprehensive/master plans, corridor studies, multimodal and complete streets plans, trail/greenway plans, concept studies, grant applications, NEPA/PEL studies, and technical reports
- Prepare and manage SEQR documentation, Environmental Assessment Forms (EAFs), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), and associated studies
- Manage project teams, schedules, deliverables, and coordination with internal staff, subconsultants, clients, and stakeholders
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data on demographics, land use, travel behavior, system performance, transportation funding, environmental conditions, and socio-economic trends using GIS, statistical software, and planning models
- Prepare and deliver planning documents and presentations for government bodies, stakeholder groups, and the public
- Lead community engagement activities, including outreach materials, public meetings, and synthesis of feedback
- Serve as a key client contact, ensuring high-quality project delivery, technical accuracy, and client satisfaction
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to professional development within the planning team
- Participate in field reviews and data collection as needed
- Support business development by contributing to proposals, scopes of work, and interviews
Required Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Urban/Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Geography, Environmental Planning, Public Policy, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, or Economics)
- AICP certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible planning experience, focused on transportation or related disciplines
- Proven experience leading planning projects and supervising tasks or teams
- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and time management skills
- Demonstrated mentorship and leadership abilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in planning, geography, environmental/natural sciences, public policy, law, landscape architecture, engineering, or related field
- Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS) for spatial analysis, mapping, and data visualization
- 10 years of experience supporting or leading public sector planning projects in the Northeast, particularly in transportation
- Active involvement in professional organizations (APA, ITE, or similar)
- Experience managing complex, interdisciplinary projects including environmental documentation (NEPA, EIS), technical studies, budgeting, and schedule management
Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based (95%) with occasional fieldwork in varied environmental conditions
- Some lifting up to 25 lbs may be required
Salary : $90,000 - $120,000
