Position: SMT Operator

Department: PCB Assembly (PCA) | Reports to: Production/Operations Manager
Location: On‑Site (manufacturing floor)
Employment Type: Full‑Time / Temp‑to‑Perm
Compensation: $25–$30/hr (depends on skills, knowledge, and experience)

Overview

The SMT Operator / Production Supervisor operates and supports surface mount technology (SMT) equipment used to assemble printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs). This hands‑on role focuses on accurate component placement, solder paste application, process quality, and uptime—while following work instructions, engineering specifications, and company quality standards. This is a temp‑to‑perm opportunity for candidates looking to establish a long-term career in a high-growth electronics manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate SMT production equipment: stencil printers, solder paste inspection (SPI), pick‑and‑place machines, reflow ovens, and AOI systems.
  • Perform machine setups, program loading, line changeovers, and feeder loading.
  • Verify component part numbers, ensure correct material availability, and maintain feeder inventories.
  • Inspect assemblies for solder defects, component alignment, polarity, and workmanship; escalate quality issues promptly.
  • Monitor equipment performance, identify issues, and perform basic troubleshooting and corrective actions.
  • Complete required production documentation and maintain accurate traceability and lot records.
  • Follow ESD procedures, safety protocols, and applicable workmanship/quality standards (e.g., IPC‑A‑610).
  • Assist with routine equipment cleaning and preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Communicate production, material, or process issues to engineering, quality, and supervisory staff in a timely manner.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1–2 years experience in electronics manufacturing or SMT/PCB assembly preferred.
  • Prior exposure to high‑reliability or regulated assembly environments is a plus.
Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with SMT processes and equipment (printers, pick‑and‑place, reflow, AOI).
  • Ability to read and follow assembly drawings, work instructions, and part labels.
  • Basic computer skills for manufacturing software, data entry, and documentation.
  • Competence with inspection/measurement tools (microscope, calipers, AOI interfaces).
Behavioral / Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and a quality‑focused mindset.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Able to work efficiently in a fast‑paced production environment with minimal supervision.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to manage priorities under shifting demands.
Preferred

  • Knowledge of IPC‑A‑610 workmanship standards (Class 2 / Class 3).
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high‑reliability PCBA assembly desirable.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive fine‑motor tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to ~30 lbs as needed.
  • Work on a manufacturing floor with exposure to soldering processes, chemical fumes, and ESD‑controlled areas.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow site safety rules.
Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain ESD compliance and follow site safety procedures at all times.
  • Use PPE as required for specific tasks (e.g., chemical handling, soldering).
