Freelance Bilingual Translator (English/French, English/Spanish, and English/Vietnamese)

Overview
We are seeking bilingual translators within our community to provide translation services for the Archdiocese of Dubuque on an as-needed basis. The anticipated workload is approximately 1–5 documents per month, although the number and length of assignments may vary. Documents will be provided as translation needs arise, and the contractor will be contacted regarding availability and the expected completion date for each assignment.
This is a flexible independent contractor opportunity for someone who is passionate about language, communicates exceptionally well in both applicable languages, and is committed to accurately conveying the meaning, tone, and intent of written materials.
Responsibilities
- Translate documents accurately between both applicable languages as needed; preserving the original meaning, tone, and intent of each document.
- Ensure translations are grammatically correct, clear, natural, and culturally appropriate.
- Proofread and edit translated materials for accuracy, consistency, spelling, and grammar.
- Maintain appropriate terminology when translating religious, ministry, community, or organizational materials.
- Maintain confidentiality when handling organizational, personal, or sensitive information.
- Communicate promptly regarding availability, questions, and anticipated completion times.
- Complete assignments independently and within mutually agreed-upon deadlines.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess valid U.S. work authorization.
- Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be willing to undergo a background check.
- Excellent written and verbal proficiency in both applicable languages.
- Strong understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and regional/cultural nuances in both applicable languages along with exceptional proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas accurately and naturally between both applicable languages.
- Previous professional translation experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience translating materials for a church, ministry, nonprofit, religious organization, or other community-based organization is a plus.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Dependable, responsive, and able to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
Independent Contractor Arrangement
This position is an independent contractor position and is not an employee position. Translation assignments will be offered on an as-needed basis, and there is no guaranteed minimum number of documents or hours.
The contractor may determine when and where the work is completed, provided that assignments are completed accurately and within the agreed-upon timeframe.
This opportunity is especially well suited for someone looking for occasional, flexible translation work rather than a traditional part-time or full-time position.
