What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outside Sales Representative - Independent Contractor position at Game Vortex?
About Game Vortex
Game Vortex is a locally owned Eastern Iowa company built around learning through play. We provide managed educational game programs designed to help childcare providers, homeschool programs, libraries, schools, and other organizations make high-quality educational games easier to access, use, and maintain.
Our services currently include two primary programs.
Our Educational Game Rotation Program serves childcare providers with curated collections of age-appropriate games that are exchanged on a regular schedule. Game Vortex handles the work behind the program—including game selection, rotation, delivery and exchange, cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and component management.
Our STEM Game Program serves homeschool programs, libraries, schools, and other educational organizations with curated game collections organized around STEM subjects. These collections remain available to the organization rather than rotating out every two weeks, while Game Vortex provides ongoing service to help keep the collections inventoried, cleaned, maintained, repaired, and ready for use.
We are looking for two independent sales representatives to help introduce and grow these programs throughout Eastern Iowa: one primarily serving the Cedar Rapids/Marion area and one primarily serving the Iowa City/Coralville/North Liberty area.
This is a 1099 independent contractor, commission-only opportunity with a flexible, self-directed schedule. There are no required weekly hours and no cap on commissions.
What You'll Be Selling
Game Vortex isn't simply selling boxes of games. Our programs are designed to take much of the work involved in maintaining useful educational game collections off the customer.
For childcare providers, that means regularly introducing fresh games without the provider having to continually research, purchase, clean, inspect, organize, and replace their own collection.
For STEM customers, that means access to curated collections organized around educational themes, backed by ongoing Game Vortex service to help keep those collections complete, maintained, and ready for continued use.
Representatives can develop customers for both programs within their territory.
That creates opportunities to build relationships with in-home childcare providers, childcare centers and preschools as well as homeschool organizations, libraries, schools, and other organizations that may benefit from Game Vortex's STEM program.
What Game Vortex Provides
You won't be starting with an empty list and being told to figure everything out yourself.
Game Vortex has already invested substantial work into researching our markets and identifying prospective customers. Representatives will receive an assigned local territory along with company-provided prospects to pursue. As Game Vortex advertising and marketing generate interested prospects, those opportunities may also be routed to the representative serving that territory.
We also provide professional customer-facing materials, comprehensive information about our programs and services, sales examples and objection-handling resources, lead-tracking resources, and direct access to the owners when questions arise.
Representatives are also encouraged to develop their own prospects, referrals, relationships, and sales opportunities within their territory.
Our goal is to give representatives enough information and resources to understand Game Vortex thoroughly and represent our programs accurately while allowing them the independence to determine how they conduct their own sales activity.
Compensation
This position is 100% commission-based. There is no hourly wage, salary, or guaranteed level of earnings.
For the Educational Game Rotation Program, representatives can earn up to $80 for each retained customer closed from a Game Vortex-provided prospect or marketing-generated lead.
Representatives can earn up to $120 for each qualifying retained customer they independently discover and develop.
These commissions are earned in stages as customers activate and remain with Game Vortex. Full commission schedules, qualification requirements, and payment details will be provided before entering into the independent contractor agreement.
Representatives can also earn commission from STEM Game Program sales. Because STEM customers can select different program packages, STEM commission varies based on the package sold. The applicable commission structure and program details will be provided to representatives after hiring.
There is no cap on commissions. Earnings depend on sales activity, successful customer acquisition, customer retention, the opportunities a representative develops, and the programs and packages sold.
What You'll Do
As an independent sales representative, you will develop business within your assigned local territory.
That can include contacting company-provided prospects, introducing prospective customers to Game Vortex, explaining our programs, answering questions, following up with interested prospects, developing your own leads and referrals, building local relationships, and helping interested customers move through enrollment.
Depending on the opportunity, you may be speaking with an individual in-home childcare provider, a childcare center, a homeschool organization, library staff, school personnel, or another educational organization.
Game Vortex handles fulfillment and ongoing service after the sale. Your focus is developing opportunities, communicating the value of our programs, building relationships, and turning qualified opportunities into customers.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who communicates well, follows through, is comfortable talking with people, and can take initiative without needing a traditional employee schedule or day-to-day supervision.
Previous experience in sales, business development, customer service, childcare, education, libraries, schools, or other relationship-based work can be helpful, but formal sales experience is not required.
We're more interested in finding someone who can learn our programs, communicate their value clearly, represent Game Vortex accurately, build relationships, follow up consistently, and recognize new opportunities in their community.
Knowledge of the local childcare, homeschool, library, education, or small-business communities would be particularly valuable.
Because these are local sales territories, applicants should live within reasonable driving distance of either the Cedar Rapids/Marion or Iowa City/Coralville/North Liberty areas and be comfortable serving prospects and customers throughout their territory.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
Game Vortex is an early-stage local company, and these representatives will be among the first people helping us grow our customer base throughout Eastern Iowa.
You aren't being handed a product and told to find every opportunity from scratch. We've already invested significant work into developing our programs, researching potential customers, building prospect lists, creating professional customer-facing materials, and developing detailed information and sales resources.
At the same time, you aren't limited to the prospects we provide.
An independent representative who sees an opportunity with a childcare provider we haven't identified can pursue it. Someone with connections in the homeschool community can develop those relationships. Someone who recognizes that a local library, school, or educational organization could benefit from our STEM program can pursue that opportunity as well.
We're looking for people who can take the foundation Game Vortex provides and build a territory from it.
For the right person, this is an opportunity to work on a flexible schedule, develop relationships throughout their local community, earn based on the business they generate, and help grow a locally owned company from an early stage.
