The Grade Crew Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all grading operations on construction projects. This role supervises grade crews, ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget, and maintains compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations. The Superintendent coordinates daily field operations, equipment usage, subcontractors, and material logistics related to earthwork and site preparation.
Key Responsibilities
Project Oversight
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise grading and earthwork activities.
- Interpret blueprints, site plans, and grading specifications.
- Ensure proper elevations, slopes, drainage, and compaction standards are met.
- Monitor production rates and adjust resources to maintain schedules.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineers, and Surveyors.
Crew Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise operators, laborers, and foremen on grade crews.
- Assign daily tasks and ensure productivity goals are met.
- Provide training and mentorship to crew members.
- Conduct performance evaluations and address personnel issues as needed.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and properly maintained.
- Maintain compliance with environmental regulations and erosion control requirements.
Equipment & Materials Management
- Oversee utilization of heavy equipment (dozers, graders, excavators, rollers, etc.).
- Coordinate maintenance and repairs with fleet management.
- Manage material deliveries (fill, aggregate, topsoil).
- Control costs by minimizing waste and equipment downtime.
Quality Control
- Verify grade accuracy using GPS, laser levels, and surveying equipment.
- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets design and engineering specifications.
- Identify and resolve field issues proactively.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain daily reports including manpower, equipment usage, and production.
- Communicate project progress to management.
- Assist in scheduling and forecasting manpower and equipment needs.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5 years of experience in grading or heavy civil construction.
- 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of grading techniques, site development, and earthwork operations.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Experience with GPS machine control systems preferred.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Pay: $28.00 - $33.00 per hour
