The Design Manager is responsible for the overall design of plans for the quoting and production of floor trusses, roof trusses, and wall panels used in residential, multi-family, and commercial construction projects for Heibar Indiana and will report directly to the General Manager and will work closely with the Operations Team.
The Heibar Indiana Design Manager will help with the start-up of a new location for Heibar, a division of Clayton Homes and will play a critical role in developing, establishing operating procedures, ensuring training occurs for a new team, and for helping to coordinate the project on the ground. The Heibar team manufactures site-built construction components like roof and floor trusses, EWP floor and beam systems, and wall panels. This position and location will provide support to our site-built partner Arbor Homes, and in this location, we will manufacture roof and EWP floor system, and potentially floor trusses initially, and with expansion will manufacture wall panels in the future. As the site starts up, the Design Manager will help coordinate activities at the site, including work alongside department managers to ensure coordination in the effort to reach the organization’s goals.
The Design Manager requires working collaboratively with other departments at the facility and at Home Office including Production, Engineering, Customer Care, and Sales as well as working with Suppliers. Ensures drawings are produced accurately and timely based off blueprints provided by customers. Responsible for the accurate takeoff of loose lumber and EWP floor systems. Requires the knowledge of commonly used framing concepts and practices within the construction industry. Responsible for the proper training and mentoring of designers in the group. A strong belief in the mission and goals of the company and the capability of working in a team environment are necessary for this position.
The Design Manager is focused on supporting and optimizing operations via integrity, professionalism, production capability, operations support, cost management, contract & process excellence, and continuous improvement.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, & develop the Design department
- Ability to set up Libraries for component systems
- MiTek systems management
- Understanding of MiTek Integrated Engineering Software Version
- Through understanding of load transfers and the ability to calculate loads throughout the structure
- Work and communicate collaboratively with the rest of the facility leadership team & corporate
- Facilitate a culture that is focused on team member experience, customer experience, & leadership
- Recruit, hire, and manage qualified Design staff
- Develop and design floor and/or roof truss concept drawings
- Ensure conformance to all relevant building requirements and municipality building codes, if applicable
- Interpret design requirements as indicated by procedures, design manuals, and other applicable specifications
- Generate layouts for final construction
- Ensure designs are accurate, optimized, and conforms to standards
- Train new associates
- Demonstrate a commitment to the quality improvement process and the philosophy of continuous improvement; identify and respond actively and with sensitivity to the needs of all customers; participates as a team player in all phases of the organization; and is open and responsive to
- Comply with all company policies and procedures
- Operate and order within the defined supply terms (lead time, minimum order quantity, delivery…)

Required Skills
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Experience in designing residential, multi-family, commercial, custom and production floor and roof trusses
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
- Experience with MiTek and/or equivalent truss design software
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints

- Knowledge of standard construction practices, codes, and carpentry

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred and at least 10 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Professional Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years relevant leadership experience
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to get along with diverse personalities.
- Previous construction experience strongly preferred
- Experience in manufactured housing is greatly desired
- Experience in high-speed manufacturing environment preferred
- Ability to adapt quickly and make sound decisions in a changing, fast-paced environment
- Truss Technician Level II training through SBCA preferred
