Summary: Under the direction of the Lower School Director, the Lower School Assistant Director is a key member of the school’s leadership team and works to support the Lower School Director’s work by providing instructional leadership, monitoring student performance and achievement, managing school operations, and fostering a safe and effective learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists the Lower School Director with planning, communicating, monitoring, and attaining the goals and objectives of the schools instructional program.
- Conducts classroom observations, identifies effective teaching practices, and understands pedagogy that results in improved student learning
- Assists the Lower School Director with leading, developing, and motivating staff so as to provide the best possible opportunities for instructional success and student growth.
- Assists with the implementation of and adherence to the school’s policies and procedures.
- Supports the achievement of school goals by demonstrating a commitment to student learning as the top priority, and by fostering a school culture centered on continuous improvement and student outcomes.
- Assists in the development of an educational vision for the school to promote the academic success and well being of each student, and holds staff accountable for the vision.
- Supports daily operation of the school including, but not limited to, student drop off/pick up, facility maintenance, food service, scheduling, attendance and classroom coverage, training drills, and classroom management.
- Articulates, advocates, and cultivates development of student capacity and willingness to embrace the schools core values.
- Helps create and maintain a positive school climate that encourages student engagement and sets high expectations for academic growth for all students.
- Facilitates staff meetings, training, and collaborative planning.
- Maintains positive communication with colleagues, community members, parents, and students so as to promote an increase in community engagement in education.
- Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement by valuing learning, respecting individual differences, and making a commitment to quality.
- Represents the school at community events, meetings, and functions.
- Attends meetings between teachers and parents to discuss student needs, grades, and behaviors.
- Assists with developing the school schedule and organizing the encore rotation.
- Assists the testing coordinator with duties and responsibilities related to administering EOG, EOC, and other state and local testing requirements.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students' needs, including students with special needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director.
Physical Requirements:
- Required to lift or carry supplies, textbooks, furniture, and equipment at a minimum of 35 pounds.
- Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis.
- Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading.
- Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement weather.
Reports to:
- The Assistant Lower School Director will report to the Lower School Director
Education, Experience, and Specific Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Education Administration, 3-5 years of experience as a classroom teacher or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess a teaching certificate from the State of North Carolina. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
