This position supports Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) Asset Renewal Program, a multi-year initiative focused on replacing aging and end-of-life airport infrastructure and systems critical to safe, efficient airport operations.
Projects typically include the renewal and upgrade of:
Mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), fire and life safety systems
Security systems and access control
Vertical & horizontal transportation systems
Building envelope and structural components
Baggage handling systems
Below-grade utilities and site infrastructure
Passenger boarding bridges and associated aircraft interface systems
The role requires coordination across a highly regulated and operationally sensitive environment, including airside and landside facilities, active terminals, and occupied airport campuses. Work may occur in both office and field settings and requires interaction with LAWA departments, City of Los Angeles agencies, consultants, design-build contractors, inspectors, and airlines.
Role Summary
The Asset Renewal Office Engineer serves as a key technical and administrative resource to the Asset Renewal Program Manager and Construction Managers, managing multiple small to mid-sized projects simultaneously.
The Office Engineer oversees construction documentation, project controls, technical review workflows, and field coordination efforts. Responsibilities include maintaining organized project files, processing RFIs and submittals, reviewing design documents, supporting shutdown coordination, and ensuring all work complies with contract requirements, engineering standards, and applicable codes.
The role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong communication skills, and an advanced understanding of construction processes—particularly in occupied and operational airport environments. The Office Engineer may also support project startup, contractor onboarding, and project closeout activities.

Essential Job Duties
Technical & Administrative Project Support
Maintain organized and detailed construction files, logs, and project documentation.
Review and oversee daily field inspector reports and ensure issues are properly documented.
Track, manage, and resolve project issues, including RFIs, submittals, and field conditions.
Provide technical and administrative support to ensure alignment with engineering standards, codes, specifications, and design intent.
Review and interpret design drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Construction Management Support
Coordinate with LAWA departments, city agencies, consultants, contractors, and airlines.
Support project startup activities, including contractor onboarding and documentation setup.
Provide support during project closeout, including O&M manuals, punch-list resolution, warranty requirements, payment releases, and final documentation.
Assist in reviewing payment applications and resolving quantity disputes.
Take and distribute meeting minutes as required.
Operational Coordination
Coordinate and implement Area Shutdown Requests (ASRs) and Utility Shutdown Requests (USRs).
Manage project activities on an occupied and operational airport campus.
Ensure construction activities do not interfere with airport operations and comply with safety protocols.
Organization & Quality Control
Maintain accurate and complete construction documentation for audits, inspections, and closeout.
Support the Program Manager and Construction Manager in monitoring project schedules and workflow adherence.
Ensure timely processing of RFIs, submittals, design clarifications, and project correspondence.
Promote consistent documentation standards across Asset Renewal projects.
Hardware/Software Knowledge
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.
Familiarity with Project Management Information Systems (PMIS).
Ability to work in CAD or Revit is a plus.
Skilled in generating logs, charts, and technical documentation.
Professional Experience Level / Other Qualifications
15 years of experience in engineering or construction management, preferably on airport projects.
Demonstrable specialized experience relevant to complex building systems, utilities, or infrastructure.
Experience with projects valued over $25 million.
Knowledge of Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build delivery methods.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Highly detail-oriented, organized, and proactive.
Ability to work with individuals across varied technical and professional backgrounds.
Capable of working modified schedules based on construction needs.
Self-starter with a results-driven mindset and willingness to assume expanding responsibilities.
Education / Training
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field required.
Master’s degree preferred.
Professional Licensure:
Licensed Engineer (California P.E. preferred)
Additional certifications (AAAE, LEED, PMP, etc.) highly desirable.
