What are the responsibilities and job description for the Market Specialist position at Applix?
About the Role
Applix is hiring a Connected Equipment & Telematics Market Specialist to support one of our strategic customers, a leading global OEM of heavy machinery. You will be embedded with the customer’s connected-products leadership team in Peoria, IL.
This is a market, product, and business analysis role—not a pure engineering position. You will deliver market research, competitive intelligence, product insights, and executive-ready presentations that help shape the customer’s connected-equipment strategy across the automotive, off-highway, construction, mining, fleet, and industrial connectivity markets.
We are looking for someone who understands how connected-equipment platforms create value through telematics, asset tracking, equipment health monitoring, utilization analytics, remote diagnostics, mixed-fleet visibility, dealer/customer workflows, and subscription-based digital services.
What You Will Do
- Conduct market research and competitive analysis across the telematics and connected-operations landscape, covering players such as Geotab, Trackunit, Samsara, Trimble, Verizon Connect, and others.
- Translate findings into clear business, product, and customer-value insights for senior leadership.
- Track trends in connected vehicles, construction telematics, fleet management, remote diagnostics, asset tracking, uptime optimization, and digital services.
- Support product-roadmap discussions by identifying customer needs, market gaps, competitive features, and emerging digital-service opportunities.
- Prepare leadership briefing decks, competitive comparisons, product-opportunity reports, and executive presentations.
- Collaborate with product, engineering, business, dealer, and customer-facing teams to turn market and field insights into actionable recommendations.
- Help define use cases around machine connectivity, asset utilization, diagnostics, maintenance, mixed-fleet visibility, dealer support, and digital-service revenue.
Required Experience
10 years of hands-on experience in one or more of the following domains:
- Telematics / connected vehicles / connected equipment
- Fleet management or asset-tracking platforms
- Off-highway or construction equipment connectivity
- Industrial IoT or connected-operations platforms
- SaaS product strategy for equipment or fleet software
In addition, you should bring:
- Prior experience with Geotab, Trackunit, Samsara, or a comparable telematics/fleet-tech company (strongly preferred).
- A solid understanding of how connected assets create business value for OEMs, dealers, rental companies, fleet owners, and contractors.
- The ability to analyze products, platforms, competitors, pricing models, partnerships, and market positioning.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build clear PowerPoint decks, market reports, and executive summaries.
- Comfort working with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
- An analytical mindset with a talent for simplifying complex market and technology topics.
Domain Knowledge (Preferred)
The ideal candidate will have working familiarity with most of the following:
- Telematics devices, gateways, CAN data, and fault-code diagnostics
- GPS tracking, asset location, and geofencing
- Equipment utilization and idle-time analysis
- Remote monitoring and predictive maintenance workflows
- Mixed-fleet data challenges and API-based platform integrations
- Dealer and customer digital portals
- SaaS subscription and data-driven service models for OEMs
