Senior Highway Design Project Engineer

The Opportunity
We are partnering with an established, multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm seeking a Senior Highway Design Project Engineer to join its transportation team.
This position is a great opportunity for an experienced transportation engineer who wants to take on increased responsibility while continuing to be hands-on with highway and roadway design projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical foundation in roadway design and experience supporting DOT transportation projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform and support the design of highway and roadway improvement projects.
- Develop roadway geometry, alignments, profiles, cross sections, and grading.
- Assist with pavement design, drainage, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control.
- Develop maintenance and protection of traffic (MOT) and traffic control plans.
- Prepare construction plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
- Utilize MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) for roadway design and plan development.
- Perform and review 3D roadway modeling.
- Coordinate with internal engineering disciplines, clients, DOTs, municipalities, and other project stakeholders.
- Assist with project schedules, deliverables, and technical coordination.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable DOT, federal, state, and local design standards.
- Perform QA/QC reviews of engineering plans and technical documents.
- Support projects throughout planning, design, permitting, and construction.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and designers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
- Approximately 3–6 years of highway, roadway, or transportation design experience.
- EIT/EI certification required.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Hands-on experience with highway and roadway design.
- Proficiency with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
- Experience with 3D roadway modeling and plan production.
- Knowledge of roadway geometry, pavement design, traffic control, drainage, and stormwater design.
- Experience preparing construction plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
- Experience working on DOT transportation projects preferred.
- DelDOT experience is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and project stakeholders.
