Utility Locate Technician (Entry-level)

Applied Ecology, Inc., a fast-growing environmental and engineering consulting business is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, methodical Entry-level Utility Locate Technician to join our growing team. This is a field-based position that operates through our Tampa office to serve local area clients.

The job of a Utility Locate Technician is to locate, identify, and mark underground utilities before construction or other excavation projects. The duties may include reading maps and blueprints, utilizing ground penetrating radar and other field measuring tools, and marking lines to locate underground utilities prior to construction. Applied Ecology is willing to train the right candidate for this position.

The utility locate technician is expected to work independently to complete work assignments efficiently and accurately. This requires reviewing electronic documents and plat maps, preparing materials for field inspections, conducting field inspections, accurately marking underground utility locations with the designated paint color, and preparing final job accounting documentation. Qualified candidates must demonstrate competence and diligence; be reliable and self-regulating; have technical skills and capabilities; possess a current, safe driving record; and be willing to learn and consistently adopt utility locate and tracking procedures.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

· Operates various electronic devices designed to assist in the locating of subsurface utilities

· Read and interpret utility records, as-built and survey drawings, and highway design plans

· Distinguishes colors to mark utilities with the designated color for the corresponding utility. Uses common hand tools such as a hammer or screwdriver to open various utility appurtenances enabling direct attachment of locating equipment

· Prepares clear and concise written reports and forms including vehicle mileage reports, daily time sheets, work completed documents, etc.

· Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Florida Driver's License to complete locating assignments and to respond to emergencies

· Operates a laptop PC to obtain information regarding excavation locations and to input status of work performed

· Prepares or updates maps to make corrections for specific plats

· Sets up or removes traffic cones for safety while marking utilities along the road

· Wears appropriate safety gear and equipment to work in hazardous environments such as construction sites and traffic rights-of-way while performing locate assignments.

· Able to create legible field sketches and perform mathematics and field measurements

· The ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical card for Commercial Motor Vehicle operation is required

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· High School Diploma or GED required

· Able to lift 50 pounds, walk over various terrains, and work in all weather conditions

· Pre-employment drug screening, background, and motor vehicle checks are required (clean criminal background is required)

· Able to learn and apply a technical process

· Current and clean Driver's License

· Committed to reporting to work consistently and on-time

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Associate's Degree

· Previous technical experience working outdoors, especially in survey or locating

· OSHA Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

· Technical skills such as accurate measurement and record-keeping and ability to use technical equipment

· Able to learn and consistently follow standard operating procedures

· Able to learn to use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and other technical equipment on the job to complete utility locates

· Able to efficiently complete the assigned work

· Able to read and interpret maps and design drawings

· Motivated to perform work accurately

· Knowledgeable of Florida’s topography, geography, and cartography

· Must be trustworthy, reliable, and methodical

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.50 - $22.00 per hour
