Primary Purpose Of Position

Child development teachers will provide an educational classroom setting for young children (infancy through five years) and university students in a laboratory center designed to model best practices in the field of early childhood education. Using an emergent, negotiated curriculum, they teach individualized fundamental pre-academic skills and lead activities to promote language development, cognitive and perceptual development, and gross motor development in children representing a cross-section of backgrounds.

Work includes supervising college students who teach in the program for practicum experience (generally 2-3 per semester). Work also includes coordinating child development lab experiences with university faculty from an array of disciplines (i.e. child development, early childhood education, art education, special education, human development, music education) and supervising lab students from these various courses. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Director and in cooperation with university faculty. Work is reviewed through periodic staff meetings, individual conferences, and observation of work performed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school and one year of related childcare experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Essential Job Functions

Lucy Brock Child Development Laboratory Program ( LBCDLP ) serves as a professional development preparation site for students in the Birth-Kindergarten and Child Development Programs.

Teachers in the LBCDLP supervise students in their Practicum and Internship experiences as well as serve as mentors for beginning teaches and model teachers for students in early education majors. As such, LBCDLP teachers should have higher levels of education than the students they supervise. Therefore, consistent with SACS and NCATE guidelines new information is added to the

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Designs and implements an emergent, negotiated curriculum utilizing currently accepted best practices and innovative techniques.
  • Leads activities in language development, perception and reading development, pre-academics, fine and gross motor skills, and social skill development.
  • Supervises and trains university students who teach in the program for practicum experience; evaluates the performance of the practicum students.
  • Coordinates and supervises shorter-term lab experiences for university students from a variety of disciplines.
  • Provides information about the techniques of the program to visitors.
  • Participates in staff development opportunities, including state-mandated workshops and in-service trainings.
  • Documents the children’s learning in various ways and makes this learning visible to parents, university students, and the children themselves.
  • Maintains a developmental portfolio on each child. Schedules and conducts annual home visits.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required For This Position

  • Experience working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
  • A thorough knowledge of the growth and development of young children and the ability to use this knowledge to plan and implement appropriate programs to meet the needs of children
  • A thorough knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and educational techniques used in teaching preschool children 0 to 5 years of age
  • The ability to communicate effectively
  • The ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, and faculty associated with the program
  • The ability to supervise students from the university doing practicum work in the program
  • A personal philosophy embracing constructive guidance, social constructivist methods, an emergent, negotiated curriculum, documentation of children’s experiences and learning, the importance of community, and environment as co-teacher
  • Must obtain criminal background check clearance
  • Must be trained in CPR and First Aid (within first 2 months of employment)

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in early childhood education or early childhood special education with practicum/internship experience and related teacher certification (e.g., birth-kindergarten certification), or graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in a related field and two years of experience teaching children birth to five in a professional setting. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Ability to oversee safety programs and standards. Ability to implement preventive and corrective actions.
  • Maintain safe and secure environments for children at all times. Constantly scan the environment making sure that safety guidelines are consistently met.

Childcare and Instruction

  • Ability to oversee provision of basic physical care of children. Ability to apply specialized knowledge of early childhood development to monitor and teach socialization and behavior skills.
  • Implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum based upon children’s interests and needs. Apply knowledge about child development to child care setting and provide model of behavior for children and students who are completing lab work for courses.

Communication

  • Ability to provide effective feedback to researchers and/or medical professionals regarding the developmental, physical, or emotional needs of the child. Ability to convey information effectively in written form, including newsletters, classroom materials, and evaluative information for research or medical reports. Ability to conduct home visits and lead community programs.
  • Convey information to families and researchers in an accurate and professional manner. Be able to write well and articulate children’s interests and developmental level through the use of documentation panels.

Physical Demands of Position

Teachers must be able to be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Will need to be able to move comfortably, from standing to sitting to working on the floor, in order to interact effectively with the children. Because of the intensity of activity and movement the job requires, teachers must be physically fit and in good health.
