The Senior Manager, Logistics is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing BIG's end-to-end logistics operations across both international and domestic freight channels. This individual will lead a team managing high-value international inbound and outbound precious metals shipments — including full customs clearance processes — as well as domestic retail parcel operations handled through carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and USPS. The Senior Manager will also own carrier contract negotiations, shipping loss mitigation strategy, and cross-functional coordination to optimize cost, speed, and security across all logistics activities. This role demands a seasoned logistics professional with deep expertise in high-value or regulated cargo, international trade compliance, and carrier relationship management, combined with strong analytical and people leadership capabilities.
The day in the life of a Senior Manager, Logistics...
International Freight & Customs
- Manage all international inbound and outbound shipments, including precious metals, numismatic coins, and related high-value cargo, in coordination with armored carriers such as Brinks and others.
- Oversee end-to-end customs clearance processes for cross-border shipments, ensuring compliance with all import/export regulations, tariff classifications, and country-specific requirements across key trade lanes (US, EU, Switzerland).
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customs brokers, freight forwarders, and bonded carriers; maintain and develop key partnerships to ensure reliable, compliant transit.
- Monitor and manage international shipping documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, export licenses, and AES filings.
- Proactively identify and resolve clearance delays, holds, or compliance risks, partnering with Legal and Finance as needed.
Route Optimization & Cost Management
- Design, evaluate, and continuously optimize domestic and international shipping routes to improve transit times and reduce total landed cost.
- Build and maintain a routing matrix that balances speed, cost, security, and insurance requirements specific to precious metals shipments.
- Partner with the VP of Supply Chain and Finance to develop and manage the logistics operating budget; report on freight expense trends and variances.
- Leverage data analytics and freight benchmarking tools to identify cost reduction and service improvement opportunities.
Carrier Contract Negotiation & Vendor Management
- Lead negotiations with armored carriers, freight forwarders, and parcel carriers (FedEx, UPS, USPS, DHL) to secure competitive rates, service level commitments, and favorable contract terms.
- Manage carrier performance scorecards and conduct regular business reviews; hold partners accountable to contractual and service standards.
- Evaluate new carrier and logistics technology partnerships to ensure BIG maintains best-in-class logistics capabilities.
- Coordinate with the insurance and risk management teams to ensure carrier liability terms and transit insurance coverage are appropriate for the value of goods moved.
Retail Parcel Loss Monitoring & Mitigation
- Lead the team responsible for monitoring domestic retail parcel shipments, identifying loss trends, and driving loss reduction initiatives in partnership with carrier partners.
- Establish and maintain a shipping loss analytics framework that tracks claim rates, root causes, and recovery metrics by carrier, route, and product type.
- Collaborate with FedEx, UPS, and USPS security and loss prevention teams to investigate incidents, escalate systemic issues, and implement corrective action plans.
- Partner with Customer Experience, Operations, and Legal to ensure a seamless, compliant claims process for affected customers.
- Develop and enforce packaging standards, labeling protocols, and chain-of-custody procedures to minimize loss and damage.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of logistics professionals across international freight, customs, and domestic parcel operations functions.
- Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular coaching and feedback sessions, and support career development for team members.
- Foster a culture of operational excellence, continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration across the logistics team.
- Develop staffing plans and drive hiring decisions to ensure the team has the capacity and capabilities to meet business demands.
Compliance, Risk & Security
- Ensure all logistics activities comply with applicable domestic and international trade laws, regulations, and BIG internal policies.
- Maintain current knowledge of OFAC, AML, and precious metals-specific regulatory requirements relevant to cross-border shipments.
- Partner with the security and risk teams to assess and mitigate exposure related to high-value in-transit cargo, including route security reviews
- Maintain business continuity plans for logistics disruptions, including carrier failures, customs holds, or force majeure events.
