Senior Database Engineer - Database Management

Location: Washington, D.C. (Onsite)

Employment Type: Contract

Role Overview

This role is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance tuning of Microsoft SQL Server databases. The position ensures the security, availability, and reliability of database systems that support business applications and data needs. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience managing large, high-availability MySQL and PostgreSQL environments, both on-premises and in the cloud. This individual will work closely with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to optimize database performance and streamline deployments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and manage Microsoft SQL Server instances and tools (SSMS, SSRS, SSIS, SSAS).
  • Manage SQL Server clustering, replication, and high-availability solutions.
  • Monitor and maintain database performance, integrity, and security.
  • Perform regular database maintenance tasks such as index optimization and consistency checks.
  • Plan and perform database upgrades, patches, and migrations, including from on-premises to Azure.
  • Troubleshoot database errors, bottlenecks, and performance issues by analyzing query execution plans.
  • Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions to maintain data security.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of database environments, configurations, and changes.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of patching cluster nodes and Always On availability groups.
  • Participate in mandatory monthly database patching and provide on-call support.
Required Qualifications
  • A BS degree with 8-12 years of prior relevant experience or a Masters with 6-10 years of prior relevant experience is typical.
  • Oracle and SQL Certifications are required.
  • Must have strong SQL Server production DBA experience, including SQL Clustering, troubleshooting, and production support scenarios.
  • Experience is required in managing SQL Server instances (2012-2019) and Oracle databases on platforms like VMWare and Azure (IaaS/PaaS). Proficiency is necessary in Oracle RAC, Oracle Enterprise Manager, RMAN backups, and Oracle Data Guard.
  • Proficient in SQL Cluster, Always-On Cluster, and on-premises to Azure migration. Experience with Azure Managed Instance, SQL STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guides), and Transparent Data Encryption (TDE).
  • Strong knowledge of Linux shell scripting and AWS concepts for DBA operations (including RDS and EC2-based databases) is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting a 24x7 operations environment.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and managing SQL Server instances up to version 2022 and Windows Server 2022.
  • Proficiency in configuring database mail for SQL job alerts and installing/configuring SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Experience setting up database users based on minimum required privileges best practices.
  • Ability to configure Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and set up database monitors using OEM and custom shell scripts.

Compensation & Benefits

The pay rate for this position is between $50.00/hr and $57.00/hr.
