Life and Disability Financial Underwriter
Role Overview
The Disability Financial Underwriter supports Short Term and Long Term Disability opportunities for new and renewing clients in the small and mid market group segments. This role prepares pricing and coverage offers and works closely with Sales, clients, and internal teams. The underwriter evaluates risk, reviews financial data, and explains underwriting decisions clearly. This role works independently most of the time, follows established guidelines, and receives guidance when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare underwriting offers for Short Term and Long Term Disability products
Evaluate financial risk and pricing for new and renewal business
Provide clear explanations to Sales, clients, and internal partners on risk selection and pricing decisions
Analyze financial exhibits and prepare accurate expense estimates
Review rate calculations and overall financial activity
Understand department and organizational goals and how underwriting supports them
Make day to day decisions independently, including in some ambiguous situations
Follow established underwriting guidelines and procedures
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Two or more years of experience underwriting Short Term and Long Term Disability products
Strong understanding of risk pool management
Knowledge of the competitive insurance market
Strong communication and negotiation skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with strong accountability
Interest in contributing to an organization focused on improving consumer experiences
Preferred Qualifications
Experience analyzing disability and health related data
Industry related coursework is helpful but not required
Additional Information
Experience with Dental, Vision, and Life insurance products is a plus
